Colorado

Sadly no roosters allowed where I live.
She is certainly an odd little bird. She looked so bad when we got her we held little hope she would even survive. She did not lay until 11 and a half months old. I only get about 30 eggs a year from her. I expected she would lay white eggs but they are very lightly tinted. She is also about half again bigger than the SSH.

Thinking I will end up putting eggs under my top of the bantams little Smartypants herself.
I had hoped to put them under Itty but she ranks very low and stands only 6 inches tall. She needs the BO to protect her sometimes.

DH told me to go ahead and order chicks but no way of knowing if I will have a broody at the arrival time that would be willing to take them under her wing.

Well seaweed and her peeps decided to integrate themselves into the general coop and flock....yesterday they got out and seemed determined to stay out while the sun was giving just a little light. The rest of the flock seems to be leaving them be.

My little slw is still making sick noises, but is not as raspy/wheezy as she was. So I'm thinking of putting her out with my layers instead of back with the cemanis and bresse. I need my bathroom back to take a hot bath in b/c I'm sick too.

I made chicken and duck soup last night from 2 leftover chickens and our first duck. Lots of ginger, garlic and onions

with home made gluten-free bread. Delicious, and I'm heating it back up for lunch today.

In the spring I will be selling my current laying flock, which will exist of my rooster Lenny who has had the crow reduction surgery along with 2 slw, 1 br, 3 ee's, 3 bigger ee's, rc leghorn and a splash polish. The 3 smaller ee's just started laying a month ago, the 2 slw and br aren't old enough to lay yet. I need to have the space to separate out my white bresse from the cemanis.

Lenny takes such good care of the girls, I won't separate them.

I had my spreadsheet out last night trying to figure out if I want to order a large order of chicks and sell the extras or just find the few breeds I still want locally. I think I'll be ordering a big order of assorted pullets from Strombergs along with a bunch of broilers. New winter project - more brooders! The nice thing is at least I can keep them in the tack room instead of our living room now. :)

Glad they are doing well and seem to be doing what comes natural.

Sorry your sick and have sick birds as well. Will you post some pics of your EE?

Super windy in Boulder today.....yuck! I am already over the winter winds.

Guess I still don't know how to reply to more than one post!!!

Sometimes leaving them to their own they sort things out, I would still keep an eye on them though.

Stay well, I had my best luck selling chickens in December of last year, not sure why........ priced them low though.

I have ordered from Strombergs, they drop ship, so my order came from Privitt in NM, ordered in February, and had four or five DOA's out of 25 chicks, but everyone else was healthy and happy! I too keep looking over what I want to add this coming year. Let me know if they carry Chanteclers, I might go in on that order with you.

Sunny and windless here in the high mountains, but of course that could all change in an instant!

I will go in on broilers for the springtime. My 2 brooder boxes in the barn are finally empty

these are most of the layers. The 3 little ee's Daisy, Agnes and Gertrude are thick as thieves and lay pretty blue blue eggs. Lenny carries terracotta egg laying genes, so any hatchlings from the ee's that lay blue/green eggs will be olive eggers, Lenny is feather footed, bearded, tufted and awesome!

Josephine the last ee pictured lays pinky beige eggs.

Hi everyone! HAD TO POST! The girls are back to laying. Or at least one is!

Found 2 eggs in the box yesterday (one was frozen; hadn't checked the day before I guess).

Now if only their combs/wattles would regain a little color, I'd have beautiful birds again.

Their molting has left them with stellar tail coverage and silky feathers everywhere.

I further insulated their sleeping coop and their nighttime temps are another degree (now usually about 7-8 degrees) warmer than ambient.

Now we're dealing with wind but at least it melts the snow.

Hope all are doing well!

We survived our first molt, yea!!!!!!!

Our new light-allowing tarp for the south side of the covered run/cage showed up...it lets in so much light. Now I'm not going out there at 2pm and finding them in their sleeping coop cuz they think it's night! So much more cheerful. The vinyl one should be here any day now so the north side will be crystal clear for them.

Color us happy.

Hmm, if strombergs drop ship from privett I'll look into them and see if I can just buy from them. I'll keep you all posted on what I decide. I'm happy to add on to the order for people.

If not for broilers/cx in the spring I might go up to feeders supply in ft collins to get the meaties.

I have a batch of bokashi ready to spray now to get the area jump started for composting. I need a plucker though. That's pretty much the deal breaker for me, my lack of plucker. I think I might could do a batch of 35 in feb, then another in april to fill my freezers until my meat breeders get up to laying/hatching.

We're talking about getting a whole grass fed cow and a whole hog in the spring too. A bit of financial planning helps us get the meat in bulk. I'm still waiting to hear from ranchway feeds for a gluten-free chicken feed. Waking up this sick again is ruining chicken keeping for me. :( so I'm hoping they get back to me soon.
