Someone finally laid some eggs this morning!



I didn't think this would ever happen! I was so excited, I'm sure I freaked them all out and caused another egg laying drought due to stress. But, man, what a surprise to find this morning especially when I hadn't found anything last night during my pen/coop inspections. When I came inside, I apparently wasn't the only one excited about this news:

whoo hoo! Love getting those first eggs. I've been so long without now I think it will be like getting the first ones all over again once they finally start laying again. I'm tempted to give them supplemental light just to make sure they remember how to do it! lol

I had thought that Spitzhaubens were Appenzeller - that is, Swiss. Is German Spitzhauben different?

There's hope for the eggless! My avatar, Merrie, hatched on March 20, 2014, laid her first green egg yesterday! Unfortunately, I'm not in Colorado, so don't have a picture of it; but just the news is marvelous. I've been waiting and waiting and.... Both of my other pullets - hatched around the same time - have been laying for a couple of months, and I thought they were slow to start!! So my housesitter and are I are joking about the need to pick up some ham to go with the green egg (hopefully eggs).

I was not going to suppliment light, but I did buy some solar christmas lights, so will string them up in the one coop to see if it helps. Mine are slowly starting back up, so who knows............. we are T minus nine days, and the days start getting longer, YAY!!!

We don't have any supplemental lighting in our coop and we are averaging 20 eggs from 23 hens right now, now that being said they are young only 8 months.

Pullets if they start laying early enough in the fall usually will lay though winter. Mine are mostly one year old hens, going through their first molt. I am getting two eggs a day from 12 hens. Almost bought eggs, by am determined to wait them out! lol

Jealous. Mine aren't laying and I've had to buy eggs. The pullers aren't laying yet (of which one turned out to be a too) and the broody who hatched them hasn't started again. the only one that was stopped due to winter and molting.

They are the same thing. The real name is Appenzeller Spitzhauben but some people call them German Spitzhauben. Obviously they don't realize Appenzeller is Swiss.
