Good morning the day after Christmas. The white Christmas came a day late here. It was sunny here yesterday and temperatures up to 45. Today we have snow - 2 inches so far and about 10 degrees. No wind yet, so not too bad out. My chickens are way less impressed with today's weather. Yesterday they got a pumpkin for Christmas and enjoyed themselves in the sun. Today is a coop day.

Sigh.... We have a bit over a foot of snow here and are 16 degrees out. My hens are in the coop. I did not even open the pop door since with a foot of snow they will just look out and get cranky.
My coop is holding at just under 30 degrees with the sealed oil heater on. I know I know heating is not recommended. I had one get frost bite last cold snap and she is not yet fully recovered.

Hey guys.... we lost one of our two peeps today  Well probably last night some time.  Cause of death is unknown-- just found her dead.  The remaining peep seems a little frightened and alone....so sad.  With the storm coming, everyone will be inside the coop anyway so she will have company.  I know better than to have peeps in the winter!  Praying this last one makes it.  I will have momma join her again with this bad cold coming as I doubt the heat lamp will be enough.  

Ooh so sorry Ryan, hope she is doing well this am.

@COChix With yours, I think I can see the bullseyes. I'll have to compare yours to mine & hopefully that'll make it easier for me to tell. I did decide to hold off on trying to incubate until February, just in case any hatch. Figured I probably didn't want to try integrating chicks into the flock during March since that's usually our snowiest month. I am terrible at waiting, though, so we'll see if I have the willpower. I want to hatch some tiny blonde glam chickens with punk rock attitudes.

I hope everyone had a happy Christmas. Mine didn't go so well thanks to my healing brain trauma & my physical trauma since I haven't been able to afford more PT. Although, because of the weather, it looks like I may not be going into work tomorrow. Give me some time to move the flock back into the barn since the snow covered almost all of their run. Give me time to clear that out as well, I suppose.

Sorry you didn't have such a good Christmas. Lol punk rock attitudes that made me lol. I hear you in incubating and trying to wait, I guess the snow is a good reminder that we are still in the middle of winter, who knew! Lol. I am beginning all my reading and research on incubating. I will need to find a spot for our incubators, hard we have a one bedroom house so limited space. We do have a building in the back that I think I will utilize.

Hi, don't know if you have posted in the Colorado thread or not, so welcome to the board. If you have posted before, just ignore the first sentence. I hear you on the snow, when I opened the pop door to the run this am, three chickens came out. I had to turn the straw in the run to assure they have some dry space to hang outside the coop today if they choose. We woke up to about 6 inches of fluffy snow in north Boulder today. What part of Colorado are you? I see you raise Welsummer's, how many do you have? We have two, just curious what their personalities are like?

We have about 6" on the ground right now and still snowing (Brighton area - N/NE of Denver). I'm not complaining as we need the moisture. It's been VERY dry this winter so far.

@COChix , I took the liberty of adding some arrows to your pic of bullseyes to assist others in seeing them. From what I see, all 4 are/were fertile. Here ya go @uzisuzuki & anyone else who may not be sure what they look like:

Thank you, I was going to do that to show the bullseye better. Our buff roos have had a high fertility rate from what I can tell as most of our eggs have bullseyes.

We got about two inches, some wind, but not bad, located west of Pikes Peak........

Opened the door to the coop, a few brave cockerals came out, and then promply went back in!!! lol Such funny little boys! This is half of them in the hay barn area.



Love the idea of little rock stars you are hoping to make this year!!!

Y'all lucked out! We ended up with about a foot of snow and lots of wind! I had to move everyone into the barn because their pen was just covered. Was going to try to clear it out today since I couldn't drive myself into work, but that did not happen. I'll have to shoot for tomorrow. Good thing everyone was happy with their move for the day.

@suncatcher I hope I can hatch a few! All the chickens I ended up with are so spunky and hilarious that I hope that personality carried over into their offspring (even though I think I may be in the minority of liking a bit of attitude in a tiny feathered dinosaur).

If I'm seeing this weather forecast right, looks like we have another sub-zero period starting Monday

From what it look like, winter weather will be with us for a while. Glad I took care of all the water buckets before this snow/cold came in. They should be good for about 2 weeks. Don't like that I'm gonna have to go back to dry feed again, and deal with frozen eggs

At least I'm off work for a good portion of the next 10 days and will be able to check the nest boxes every couple of hours. Hope y'all are ready for this next blast.

I've posted before, but not a lot. I'm in Buena Vista, directly east of the Collegiate Peaks Range. We ended up with about 4 inches. So far no wind, but it will come --- always does. COChix, I have about 12 welsummer hens and 5 roosters. I know, I know I don't need 5. One is the father of all the other males. This next spring I will hatching out more wellies. I usually hatch them every other year. I have several years of hens. Personality wise they are pretty laid back. I do have one that I call Miss Spazz. And no - I have not used her to breed with although she lays really dark eggs.

Is there a temperature point where you bring your birds inside your house? If not, what do you use in the coops for heat that gives you peace of mind when temps are in the negatives?
