I think I may have lost my mind lol.
I saw a thread about the "Cackle Hatchery Surprise". I thought I would tease DH and suggest I order one. They guarantee 40 baby birds, any breed, color, or combination of fowl can be included. That means any breed... ok any color... ok .........wait....... any breed?

Ducks, turkeys, peafowl, geese, guinneas etc? OH MY. It comes to about 1.50 a bird if only 40 are shipped, most people are reporting over 50 received. I became intrigued and read the entire thread. Most people are reporting that it is mainly chickens and not to many roosters. Some are indicating ducks and turkeys or other types of birds in the mix.

I kind of want to order one now.

DH said "Go for it so long as you can sell the extras".

Chicken math in exponential form.

That hatchery surprise looks so tempting!
I'll be placing my order in the next day or two (delivery in late April probably). Let me know asap if you'd like to tag on to the order or would like any of the below breeds. I noticed some breeds allow less than 5, some don't. So if you want anything special let me know so I know to order enough.

Sorry, shouldn't have posted before I was certain. After a few hours of research, it looks like it I will place my order with Cackle.
I plan to order the following as soon as their spring ordering is opened. Each chick (except for brahmas) will be $6 if picked up within the first week. Prices will go up each week after that.

Buff Laced Polish (S/R)
Gold Laced Wyandotte
German Spitzhauben (S/R)
Easter Eggers
Dark Brahma ($10/ea)

Belgian D'Anver (S/R)
Bantam cochin (S/R)
Porcelain D'Uccle (S/R)

and a rainbow assortment of pullets (can include leghorns and rare breeds)

Please let me know soon if you would like any of these so I can make sure I order enough. Or if there is a certain breed you really want, I can add it to my order. They do have a 5 chick minimum though.

I was looking at Meyers "Fry Pan Speical" last fall, they are 30 cents each per 100, I do see they are .74 for 50, and all roosters. Still a bargain though!!! Pretty sure one can sell the extra's as meat birds, they will not grow as fast as the Cornish, but they have all summer to fill out!

I see chicken math has taken ahold on this thread. ;)

Lol, I noticed that too!
I decided on Cinnamon Queens, lots of eggs from sweet birds. And, I can hatch some mixes and not worry about accidentally selling them to someone that wanted Cochins. I told my husband that by the time we move, I'll have perfect winter hardy egg layers...it stinks because we won't take any with us to a new property.

Yes, I know that feeling. How many chickens do I have? I honestly don't know. A lady asked me that and I said, "a lot". She said, "What is a lot? 25?" I said, "Yeah, plus a few." She looked at me like I was nuts. (She owns 4.) If I stopped to actually count, I'd be shocked. But last weekend I figured out that I have 14 bantam cockerels that need to go bye-bye. Those are just the ones I want to be rid of. Chicken math is a killer and so is the feed bill.
