I have my incubator pretty full now

I'm going for my phd in chicken math btw :)

You guys are killing me. I just broke down and ordered some bantam barred rocks and bantam EE. They don't come until the end of April, so I'll have plenty of time to add to the order in a weak moment.

The chickens that I really want are 'super blue egg layers'. I love mutts and I used to have 5 super blue egg layers. They were a leghorn and EE X. THey laid beautiful sky blue eggs, and lots of them. They were small birds and really pretty.
Does anyone have any or know of any close by?

I sold some, and culled some, but somehow my numbers did not go down. Not sure what is going on...... oh yeah, I hatched out a bunch! lol

Henhut, I have just as many to cull, but the Bantam Cochins are such sweet little things is very hard for me.

Hehehehehe, seeing that picture of a full bator, you will have quite a few at your place soon too!!!!

We actually culled a few older hens in the last few months, and recently 3 Cochin boys that were basically just eating. I've got three Cochin boys left, two blues and one beautiful solid black. I don't have many Cochin pullets, since Mareks seems to take them out at an advanced rate, but I think we have enough to get a decent hatch around March or so. I'll also be hatching more of the Cream Cochin mixes, since they're eggs ended up such a pretty green. I really wish we could hatch earlier, and maybe have chicks hatch when the Cinnamon queens arrive, but Cochins are pretty unpredictable for POL. Hopefully it's soon though.

Well, I got some bad news in regards to my trauma recovery and it looks like I won't be able to make any additions to my little flock any time soon.

It turns out that I might not have suffered a mild concussion but that I suffered moderate brain trauma in my car accident. What that means for me is that I've been prolonging my recovery by trying to function at a level not compatible with where my brain is at right now. I'm going to have to cut back to half-time at work and that means a cut to half my pay. I'm really disappointed about this, beyond the obvious reasons of a lot of the after effects of the trauma having a high chance of being permanent, but also because I don't know if I'll even be able to afford the 8 chicks I ordered in November or even trying to hatch any of my hens eggs.

Super disappointed right now, but I'm totally going to live vicariously through everyone else bringing in new flock additions and doing hatchings.

My LF Cochins took forever to lay, it takes a long time for them to mature. I picked to many breeds that are slow to mature, BCM, Barnies, etc. Your reds will start laying young would be my guess, and often!

I sent in an order to Sand Hills Preservation back in December. Hoping for some Icelandics, LF Cochins, Marraduna Basques (Euskal Oiloa)and Buckeyes and whatever they send for a total of 50 chicks. We will see if they have to substitute for the Basques, in which case I asked for some Wyandottes.

It turns out my 25 year old son is rather tender about a certain hen going to the freezer. I don't know why, it's not like he tends to them or even interacts with them. He has named a large portion of them but seemed rather upset that Poptart is on the freezer list. It is not like he is new to where food really comes from. We have raised cattle for food before.

May have to amend the freezer list to exclude the Poptart.

UUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH the who stays and who goes is a bummer when trying to take other peoples emotions into account.

I am hoping for some LF Cochins in my mix from Cackle too. I am also hoping my bantam cochins will be broody when the littles come in. LOL I know FAT CHANCE.

Silly chickens.

Uzi
That is a mega bummer. Slow and easy with the recovery will help in the long run. Try and remember that taking care of yourself right now means you will have a much better future for the rest of your life.
It will work out, just maybe not on the timeline you would like.

Double
I still see 8 empty slots in the pic.

I am totally on the same page with the little bantam cochins. Cute, friendly little balls of fluff.

Yep, our first Cochins took forever, but then they laid all winter...I'm hoping for the same with these new girls. Also hoping the older Cochins start back up, and soon, otherwise they're on the fast track to the freezer.

LMAO!
I swear I have done this...turns out, we had 32.

lol, I cannot take full credit as I got it from another thread.

Yes,  I know that feeling.  How many chickens do I have?  I honestly don't know.  A lady asked me that and I said, "a lot".  She said, "What is a lot?  25?"  I said, "Yeah, plus a few."  She looked at me like I was nuts.    (She owns 4.)   If I stopped to actually count, I'd be shocked.  But last weekend I figured out that I have 14 bantam cockerels that need to go bye-bye.  Those are just the ones I want to be rid of.  Chicken math is a killer and so is the feed bill.

Lol, people who don't own a lot of chicken have no idea how obsessive we can become. Gosh I can only imagine our numbers after we hatch this spring. I will have to be realistic as to how many we try and hatch. I have heard that you should try hatching double what you plan on keeping as not all make it. Or maybe that is how chicken math gets out of control!

LMAO, let us know how that PHD works out for you. ;)

Oh gosh :hugs to you. While I know it is super discouraging to hear those things now, especially while you were gearing up for spring hatching, etc. it is much better to be gentle on yourself and your brain right now so you can heal properly. Trust me after two neck surgeries and now facing wrist surgery, I know the importance of letting your body heal. Just because the docs say you might have permanent damage, they don't know for sure what your prognosis in the future will be. If you take the time now, eat healthy (I would suggest juicing, especially Kale) and take supplements/vitamins, I bet you would be surprised how well your body will respond. I know me saying all that may not make things better right now. If there is anything we can do to help let us know. If you want to add to your flock but can't afford, we can offer some chicks or eggs to hatch. I know they wouldn't be a true breed of chicken but they will be cute none the less.

Love the name poptart! Sorry for the added issue of your sons sudden interest in the chickens. He loves them but secretly didn't tell anyone. ;)
