I was worried about the winter no eggs again thing.
I am looking at BA, and some assorted that I would be selling off. Feather footed assortment and perhaps some BO. The Feather footed assortment seems to be the hang up with the order.
Bummer that since I wanted to keep 2 of the LF Cochin or Brahama I would hope to get.
HMMMM choices, choices.
Even if I put in for a couple specific cochin or brahama it kicks it to the end of April.
I may have to skip them then.

Thanks for the input.

I think Ideal will ship small orders, but you will get roosters as packing peanuts if I recall correctly. Maybe you could do two orders??? One now and one late in April.

BA and BO are both great production breeds, I would think they should be at POL at or close to five months.

eta, my LF Cochins took forever to start laying, I am thinking they were at least nine months old, or maybe older!!! I know nothing about Brahmas.

Cochins are the absolute worst if you really want eggs. Honestly, I love them, but they can take up to 9 months to lay. They are also pigs, eating large amounts of food, with much less give back then other breeds. Plus, they need extra protein for all that feather growth. Unless you truly love them, and NEED them, I'd skip them and get your shipment faster. Especially for winter egg laying.

Really? I think that might be a little inaccurate,. Depends on their upbringings and especially since they get pretty decent sized, i understand if they eat a lot. They may not lay eggs right away but you have other egg layers to help with that. Plus Cochins can be a great economical liablity due to that they are great show birds. :) Sorry you have a bad experience with them but OMG, your dog is adorable. haha.

Yes they add roosters. It says they add them if less than a quarter box is ordered. I keep messing with the order to try and get 25 with most being ones that tend to be in demand so I can avoid the rooster thing.

I think I have it nailed down with some BA, PR, Delaware and assorted heavy pullets.
I know if I order all BA I will be kicking myself since they are the ones I would want to keep.

She said her hen has been broody for almost a month. She doesn't think she will ever give up so she wants to give her some eggs.

Is BL the leghorn?
If she's already been sitting for a month I wouldn't want her to sit another 3 weeks. Jax was setting up the chick pens and I thought they said they would be in Friday. I'd be more tempted to give her a few chicks now. (and of course, Feeder has chicks). Brown leghorn.

I will have to agree with Ashdoes, they take forever to mature and lay, and their caloric needs are much higher than my layers. The only upside is if they go broody and you can put 12 eggs under them easily. Between them and my Bantam Cochins, I much prefer my Bantams. I guess it is all about what one prefers. My Bantams were/are laying by five months, and usually broody once a year, they make perfect little incubators too!

I do have 3 bantam cochin. Yes mine have gone broody on me as well. I was thinking to have a larger broody that could protect the littles better than the bantams can.
It would be the end of April before I could even have a chance of getting any through Ideal.
I plan on calling Cackle where my current order is and seeing what we can do to make it so I do not end up with roosters or perhaps cancel it.
If I cancel it I can still order through Ideal.
I did not realize Cackle is so much more than Ideal.
Just having a hard time finding the breeds I want at a decent price with a decent delivery date.

I wonder if Privitt has what you are looking for? They are closer too, in New Mexico. My bantams think they are bigger than they actually are, they will take on a big hen if they have to. lol
