I do have 3 bantam cochin. Yes mine have gone broody on me as well. I was thinking to have a larger broody that could protect the littles better than the bantams can.
It would be the end of April before I could even have a chance of getting any through Ideal.
I plan on calling Cackle where my current order is and seeing what we can do to make it so I do not end up with roosters or perhaps cancel it.
If I cancel it I can still order through Ideal.
I did not realize Cackle is so much more than Ideal.
Just having a hard time finding the breeds I want at a decent price with a decent delivery date.

Is there any reason you couldn't get eggs or chicks from members on the board(s) here? That would save the wait/mail times/issues to a great degree... just wondering...

DH and I were discussing that too. Since what I really want is some more Aussies it seems that would make the most sense. I am not sure if my Bantams will go broody on me this year since they are in with the big gals now. Time is the issue for me. If they do not go broody until late May like last year then it is 3 more weeks to hatch and no eggs for winter.

If they do go broody I would love to hatch some out for sure. I hate seeing them sit and sit and sit for nothing. I will for sure be letting you know if they do since you have BA and are willing to accept any roos back.
I have never hatched any chickens out but I have had ducks and geese hatch out. Never used an incubator just broody hens.

I wonder if Privitt has what you are looking for? They are closer too, in New Mexico. My bantams think they are bigger than they actually are, they will take on a big hen if they have to. lol

I had looked at them until I found out that Welp uses them for everything but broilers. All my Welp birds have been the ones with issues and the ones dying way to young.
I decided to avoid them.

My littlest bantam hangs out with the BO and BA. She can be bossy with the BA even. The Wyandottes are not so nice to her. I am getting rid of the Wyandottes.

On shipping chicks in April. We got ours on 04/15 last year, we got first eggs at the beginning of August. It was cooler when we got our chicks. We ordered from Meyers and we lost one after shipment.

Our mixed flock matured at varying rates, which is kinda nice having some eggs fairly early before winter. Our slowest to mature are our dark Cornish/barnevelders mutts and the EE. With 25 and seven different breeds it is hard to know for sure who laid when. Obviously the EE where the easiest to figure out. Our BR was first to lay then the delawares/RIR and then the Welsummers, EE and lastly the Cornish mutts.

This is my silkie, no comb at all, just tons of feathers, not the best picture, but all I have right now. He has bright blue near his wattles. I have completed my horizontal nipples project, both bucket have their heaters in them. They seem to be working just fine.

I got my BA's as day-olds from Murray McMurry at the end of May. They started laying a few eggs a week right about Late September, early October and are now laying pretty much steady. I now get 3-6 eggs a day from them. I have 7 hens in with 2 BA roos and a Dominique roo (he was a "rare bird" extra thrown in as Murray does with virtually all orders unless specifically asked not to).
I've been nibbled on by the incubation bug and am considering building/buying one and getting started with it

If I do that, I'll most likely be advertising chicks on CL. The way my eggs are stacking up right now, I may have to start advertising hatching eggs on CL as well.

Congratulations Cochix! It looks like you will be in great shape - chicken-wise - while you're recovering from your surgery. I'm also impressed that you managed to prepare meals for your convalescence. When I had shoulder replacement surgery a couple of years ago, I would have starved without friends. Let us know if you need anything - I'll be in town till March 4.

While researching chickens in England, I found something called the Burford Brown, which is a specialty egg that is sold for a lot of money. It's all very hush hush and proprietary. Well heck, our Marans and Welsummer eggs could make us rich!!
