Perhaps what I should do is just get some on order from pretty much anywhere and say a long prayer.

I need to stop reading reviews of hatcheries since it is not helping me at all.

What?! You mean your past hatchery order(s) didn't come with a lifetime warranty? I thought everyone's did?! Mine were warranted against death as long as they lived

I just do not want to have to deal with them dying so suddenly and so young.
I had planned to keep them for 4 years then process them out. If they keep dropping dead on me at only a year or so old it is stressful and depressing. I think my breaking point was the 8 month old bantam. I really liked her and she was to be a pet only.
It is one thing if it is a bird I intended to dispatch but another if it is a pet.

Silly to cry over lost fluffies but it hit me hard when I lost her.

Does anyone here have experience with Bumblefoot? Does it just happen from an injury to the foot/toe itself or can it happen from a toenail injury?

I came home from seeing The Imitation Game & discovered Odysseus had somehow managed to rip one toenail dang near to the toe. There doesn't appear right now to be any damage to the flesh parts, just the nail, but I didn't have my glasses on & my brother has a serious aversion to birds & didn't want to get too close when I asked him to double check the wound for me. Obviously, I'll be mother hen'ing him a bit more as I watch for any changes, but I thought I'd check if anyone here had any advice.

EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't write this very clear. I know he doesn't have bumblefoot and that his injury is just the toenail being ripped off. I was just uncertain if bumblefoot can be caused by any sort of infection entry point on the foot/leg/nail or if it was more specific. My question was more out of curiosity's sake than thinking my bird had it and if anyone had advice for this type of injury. Again, I apologize for not making the initial post more clear.

Looks to me like he simply ripped/broke the nail off close to the quick... It doesn't appear to be bleeding. It doesn't appear to me to be anything major at this point. It will re-grow out in time. That has nothing to do with bumblefoot... That's more like a huge wart/corn that happens further up the foot...

I think it is kind of a crap shoot as to the year, breed, hatchery, etc. After all, they are breeding for egg production, not longevity and if they think certain breeds are more popular, then they will push the limit of acceptable genetic okayness for the breeders. Kinda like what goes on with any popular dog or horse breed or anything "in". Patience is the key and then you can buy good stock from reputable breeders and start breeding your own that have adapted to your micro-environment and have fun with it. It is a shock to have hens die when there is no real reason for it as we see nothing wrong but it certainly happens and you seem to have gotten more than your fair share. I still have two of my original hatchery girls going on seven years now so there are some hearty ones out there, we just need to sift through and find them.

I have colored egg layers!!! still no hatching, but the crack is bigger.

On another note, I have been speaking with Ranchway Feeds in ft collins and they are making me 1000lbs of gluten free organic non gmo chick starter at 23% protein, and flushing the mill with alfalfa to minimize cross contamination. They will quote me price tomorrow.

Hey DK, two questions this am...
1). How's the hatch going any updates?
2). Did you get that quote on feed, just curious what they were gonna charge you. Also trying to figure out feed and the best options.

Maybe during my recovery I will get Azure figured out and get that ball rolling.

Here are updates. 2 chicks hatched!

20 white bresse eggs made it into lockdown yesterday morning!

along with 4 eggs from my ee's.

The white bresse roos Boris and Jean-Pierre are back from crow reduction surgery in group isolation

introducing our new innovation, the shut up cup. Yes, the ac are making me batty. My neighbors lied to me in my face when I brought over blood orange pound cake and eggs to ask if my chickens were bothering them.

They looked me straight in the eyes and said "We don't even hear your chickens!" As I hear 3 distinctive different roosters start in on a crowing contest, while I hand them a pound cake and 6 eggs cringing.

My 1000lbs of gluten-free 23% protein chick starter non gmo but has soy all organic bagged with usda organic certification is ready for PICK UP from Ranchway feeds. The costs including bags etc is about .60 a lb. Considering I was spending about $2.17 a lb with the incomplete feed, this is a far better deal.

If anyone wants to buy any off me, it would help if I weren't feeding all my mice so well. I still need to figure out picking up so many bags of feed from ft collins to me.
