I went to the doctor on Thursday, which was exactly 4 weeks with the crud. Never had fever, but wiped out to the point of naps 3-4 times a week. Nasal congestion that won't quit. Cough medicine didn't help, nor did cough drops. The nurse described it as coughing out your insides to the point you fear you'll toss your cookies - nasty stuff. The doctor gave me an inhaler with 14 doses. So far not much has changed. Nothing works but lots of time and lots of fluids - no antibiotics. Sigh. I'm sorry for those who are early into the crud. Hope you can recover quickly, but if not, well, you're in good company.

I will be on my trip to England to take care of my grandchildren in March and till April 6, so I can't do any chicks till at least then. But I am really enjoying everyone's "Chick Tales - illustrated" so please keep them coming!

Sooooo funny!!! Love the hat too! I think we got down to 0 degrees last night, was 20 in the coop, everyone was tucked in tightly. Here I thought our single digits overnight were over! I hope it warms up this week, as my girls had really picked up on laying this last week, I had six eggs yesterday, not bad for 12 hens! I sold/traded my cochin hens, and two of my mixed pullets, so my numbers are waaaayyyyy down.

FYI, for those in the Divide/Woodland Park/Florissant area, the feed store in Florissant, The Outback, is thinking of having a farmers market this year, I believe they are looking to start it in June. If interested please call the store, and let them know what you could bring to participate in it. I don't grow things well here at this altitude, but thought of selling hatching eggs or chicks.

On a side note, I am thinking really hard about selling my Speckled Sussex hen. She's not quite 11 months old, and has been laying 3-4 lovely soft beige eggs per week. She's healthy - maybe too much so, because as the alpha hen she always gets to the food first and longest. But she's developed a nasty habit of pecking/going after my Bantam English Chocolate Orpington - and I don't want that in my little flock.

If anyone has any interest or suggestions, please let me know. PM me if you might want her.

Well, I left work early because I've gone from stuffy head & cough to full on fever & everything else. Came home to my problem child hen, Penelope, needing a major behind soaking. Think I'll take a nap & let the cold medicine start working before I try tackling that. My first time bathing a bird. This should be interesting. Thank goodness I colour my own hair & don't have a shortage of gloves.

Everyone talking about their hatchings & chick orders coming in is making me crawl out of my skin waiting for my chicks/eggs! If I had a serious incubator like everyone else here, I think I'd stop waiting for the eggs my mom ordered me & just start my own flock's eggs now & do a staggered hatching! My broody hen is even more impatient than I am now - I took her off the egg she was sitting on in the barn coop & now she's sitting on the golf ball in the nesting box in their outside run trying to hatch it! I can't wait to get that coop built for them. She can hatch all the chicks she wants after that happens!

Can you believe it has been 18 days since I got the incubator from PC and set my eggs? I am sure I will have questions over the next few days and my first one is; Is today lockdown or tomorrow? I set the eggs at 8am February 1st, so do you count the last day as one of the 21? Do I expect them to start to hatch on Saturday or to start Sunday?
I took out 9 eggs yesterday that weren't developing. None had anything developing in them. All were from PC, so I am guessing they weren't fertile?
The rest (14) I can see veins and stuff moving, so

Maybe, although I have bantams, how is she near large fowl?
