Latestarter, re the pullets in your nest boxes. I often have that problem until they start laying, then they roost with everyone else. Mine always sort themselves out when they lay.

3 chicks now! A few more pipped!

These birds (BOs) are already laying, and have been for quite a while... They all have saddle sores to varying degrees on their backs as well, so I know they're being mated. On another note:

Update: Just checked on eggs and found a BO pullet inside a nest box with a 3/4 eaten egg and she was picking at/eating egg saturated straw while I watched. This was one of the groups I found egg residue from yesterday. Was sorely tempted to grab her right then and there and process her, but didn't see her actually eating from the egg, so she might have just happened to be there when I opened the nest box door

There were also 2 eggs in the litter on the floor in their enclosure, both un-molested.

Having had/owned these 4/5 breeds now for 3/4 of a year, over the next couple of months I'm going to be doing some serious evaluation & may decide to process a couple of the groups in their entirety (or sell them at a local chicken swap/farmer's market) and replace them with hatched offspring from the groups I keep, or replacing them with new birds of different breeds.

I have seen hens get into eggs that had a poor shell. Perhaps the eggs being eaten have a thinner shell or some other defect. I have seen my own hens gather in a group and demolish an egg that had a crack in it.
It can become a habit of course but there are remedies posted about on here.

Reading about everybody hatching eggs, and the fact I have spring fever, chick fever, and two broody hens... Well it finally got to me. I put 9 eggs out under my broodies last night.

So far, so good. I went out and gave them some treats, and they seem to be just happily brooding away (well, as happy as an angry broody can be!)

I think this puts me on track for a hatch on about Friday the 13th. These will be my good luck chickens!

I hope this works out! I would be very excited to get to watch some mommas raise their chicks!

Been snowing pretty heavily since 6 am here. Some is melting as it hits the roads but sticking to everything else. Wind is picking up and making it near white out conditions in the yard.

Hoping everyone is having a safe day.
