Hey there kids. I have a broody faithfully sitting on 8 hatching eggs that are set to pop tomorrow. Can they be sexed right away? I saw it on 'Dirty Jobs' so it must be possible!!!! Thank You

I have had good success feather sexing after the first day. You can google how to do this. It really depends on what kind of chicken however to how easy it is. One row of feathers on the wing tips and it should be male. Two rows of feathers on the wing tips and it should be female. Wing feathers generally grow out faster on the females

Had the same experience as Samr, I was able to clearly id the males using the feather method. It is what they did back in the old times before we decided we needed to breed sex linked chickens.

Hey there @intangible04
! :frow   :welcome and the Colorado thread! Good to have ya here. Sounds like you've come quite a ways over the years. Good luck with the new coop and new additions. Share some pics with us when you get a chance!  It's kinda a site/thread requirement.  We all look forward to going OOOOhhhh... & AAAaahhhhh... ;) and who can resist chick pics?

Over the weekend made some pretty good progress and I definitely put the hours in, at least 12 hours Saturday, a solid 8 hours in Sunday, and a few in yesterday after work. Phew I'm ready for a break! Can't wait to be done. Why does it always seem in theory that there isn't much left to do but then in reality it really amounts to so much more work. Lol. All that's left is the nest box, the roof, hinging the windows and chicken's entry, and the roosts. And then, painting all of those. It sure doesn't seem like much, in theory. I havent forgotten the pictures, just need to find the time.

Welcome to all the newbies!!!!!  Sounds like a lovely plan on adding more chicks.  I was looking for a BCM last spring.  Put him up on the BST page here, you never know........

Good news! I was able to sell him Friday to a really nice older couple from Yoder. Seems like they're going to take real good care of him but for all I know their "200 acre farm" could have been a metaphor. In all seriousness though, they seemed like they are going to baby him, even try taking the mean out of him. They even gave me more than what I was asking for him.
It's kind of hard adjusting to the silence now! Lol. My girlfriend is excited she can walk around the yard without having to carry around a pitchfork and I'm excited I don't have to watch my back.

My chicks are estimated to arrive Thursday! 3 days in transit seems kind of long though...How exciting! I'm debating keeping them in the garage or my spare basement bedroom. My garage hits a high of about 94 and a low of 72. My basement I'm not sure yet but I would guess a high of around 80 and a low of about 68. I'm thinking the basement because the temperature doesn't swing as much but in the garage they wouldn't need a heat lamp.

*Edit* Checked the tracking and it shows they left Springs this morning! Maybe they'll be here today despite the estimated delivery still showing for Thursday.

*Edit edit* They're here!

Nice you made progress on your coop building! Wow, ordered chicks and they are already here! Congrats! Agree, I would keep them in the basement, as the temps would be more stable. Can't recall what you ordered???? Or where you ordered from???

Sexing by feathers is never as accurate as vent sexing, but is a way to weed out some of the boy early on! I do it the old fashioned way, I wait until they are crowing! lol

P funk! Welcome back! Hope those pop soon for you!!!

Does anyone know of someone willing to help chicken and duck sit in the Fremont county/ Rockvale area? I am not able yet to post on the BST forum, but really need help. We are to visit my family out of state next week and our arranged morning caregiver cancelled. I need morning care, and perhaps an afternoon check up, next week, Monday July 20 to Friday July 24th. I have the evenings arranged. Any advice would be appreciated! I am worried to death on finding someone reliable to care for my girls!
