Anybody near Colorado Springs/Denver looking for a Buff Orpington Cockerel? Great temperament. Perfect health. We got a group of hens for egg laying and one ended up being a roo. We cannot have a rooster per our HOA so we have to part with this handsome guy. We are in Black Forest, but work in Denver M-F. We can arrange a halfway point to meet for anyone interested but who is not in the immediate area. He has been raised free range and fed a high quality corn free, soy free diet along with fruits and vegetables. 20 weeks old.

The vaccination debate is on going.... those who swear by it, and those to are taking a more natural approach. I say whatever works for you is the way to go!

Thinking about that Mareks article, if vaccinated chooks are "shedding" Mareks into their environments all the time, would that not put all of us in the same situation as Ashdoes? @dretd do you have any information about that?

Okay. Just discovered mites in the coop. I checked the chickens and I don't see signs of them under their wings or near vent. I put DE in nest boxes, rubbed into roosts, put into the deep method straw. I also coated each bird with DE being careful to stay away from eyes and beak concentrating on vent area, under wings and around the legs in case they are crawling up their legs at night. I still didn't see evidence of mites on the girls but I figure if there are mites in the coop, there are mites on the birds too.

What have you found to be an effective remedy? Any suggestions will be appreciated. TIA

Sevin dust is what I used. I had mites get into my nest boxes and sevin dust knocked them right out. They were only in the external boxes and both of those boxes had broody hens in them. I dusted every chicken with sevin. Wear a mask of course and even though you did some DE on the chickens you may want to use some sevin if not on them then at least on the roosts and in the bedding. It is not approved for use on chickens but I did it and had no ill effects with 19 hens that I had at that time.
They get into ever stinking nook and cranny in the coops. Nasty buggers need killed off for sure.

Is it wrong that I want to pet them all?

Do all vaccinated chickens shed for years, and years? Maybe there is a difference in the shedding from the vaccine, and the actual having Mereks???

I am keeping my hatchery chicks in a separate brooder from my home growns, since this is the first time in two years I have ordered from a hatchery. I also did not have these current hatchery chicks vaccinated, so hoping I am ok when they are old enough to integrate into my current mostly unvaccinated flock. I am not sure if it is a time thing, but I have put unvaccinated pullets in with year old feed store chickens that probably were vaccinated, and had no problems.

Guess it is time to do some more research on this whole shedding of Mereks from vaccinated chickens!

LOL, I will pet them for you! I need to get better pictures of them, as some of them have very pretty markings!

I did paint the new coop we built. I told hubby I was not having mites on my chickens again. I caulked the corners and edges of the coop with paintable caulking and then I painted the entire thing with an airless paint system. So far the caulk has not begun to peel up or degrade at all.

I am a bit neurotic. OK so most that know me well would say I am totally neurotic.

Gosh Uzi, you are just a bird magnet! Started with a little rooster and now you've graduated to pea cocks! Better watch out... next thing you know there will be strange ostriches hanging out looking for handouts
