We had HUGE winds here last night, hard to tell how much snow, as we have foot high drifts.... but I am guessing around four or five inches. Mostly had terrible wind, yep, the weather guys did not get this storm right, but then with this big of an El Nino, we will see them off their game all winter!

No advice on the heated rain barrels, but sure someone will have some great advice!

STILL windy here in Loveland. I could use some heat oh my it is a biting wind after all the warm days we had.

I too noticed the sun around 11 am over the mountains.

The chickens do not seem bothered by the high wind and are out and about in the run right now.

The mice that keep getting in the coop seem to be bucket wise now. I will keep changing the location and upping my game on them.

I hope everyone was safe today. That wind was interesting to drive in this morning even though the roads I was on were pretty darn dry. I would not want that wind with icy roads at all.

We lucked out in Boulder and didn't even have a dusting this am, just drizzle. Hope those out east and south are fairing ok.

@uzisuzuki sounds like your area is pretty hard hit, how is everyone?

So far, so good! Thank you for asking! The only serious casualty was one of the trees in our front yard - a large branch was snapped off in the winds. We didn't have any power from around 2-8am, so that got cold. Unfortunately, my attempts at winterising couldn't prevent the high winds blowing rain & snow into the pen & nesting boxes but fingers crossed for the rest of the season. All the year olds came out & didn't seem bothered by the weather. The younger ones were not having it, though. The peas were in & out, which surprised me the most. Hope no one had any serious issues!

Wow, there but for the Grace of God. Blowing snow is the pits. Happy to hear you and yours came out OK. So little happened here, I would never have imagined. Whenever I feel like whining, I just look at my birds - and read BYC.

Well, I'm in Weld County so if there's going to be a breeze we usually end up with gale force winds. LOL It's not that we got a lot of snow, it's just a lot of wind kicking up that snow.

very high winds here as well.
do not know what I even can use to close the run partially, i have high winds from all sides, unless i literally put out the reinforced fence i do not think anything else will have it....
I can try to put poly roofing so i block under the coop. I'll re-populating entire flock... so i'm up to new chicks in Fenruary-January

Glad everyone faired the storm well. Final selections have been made for 11 birds to make the move with us. Sadly we will process three, 18-month-old hens the feather pickers and the soft shell egg laying girl.

Anyone else battling broodies? I have a Pullet that has been broody a few days, sleeping in the nest box and sitting on nothing. Nothing like the screaming sounds of a broody hen first thing in the am when checking for eggs.

We had some seriously high winds last night and they have continued this am. I had to tether myself to the coop this am when I was doing chores.....

Lived in Greeley for seven years, man I don't miss the plains winds. However the Boulder winds are no joke either, I couldn't imagine the settlers in covered wagons, during the cold windy winters.

Me neither, and I DO think of them - and the natives - from time to time. Donner Pass, too. And the chickens who came with the pioneers? I've got some wind damage to attend to today, from last night's winds. Being deaf, I don't hear any of what's going on outside, and sometimes when I look out in the morning after a high wind, I find my world ever so slightly rearranged, almost to my surprise. Yep, I wonder how those old wagons managed to stay upright,

The wind here is up a bit, but nowhere near what it was leading up to and during the storm. I was pleasantly surprised at the temps when I went out to feed the chickens as I expected 20s last night but I don't think it went much below freezing if it even made it there. Right now it's over 40 out. Even being deaf, I would imagine that you can feel the pressure changes inside the home as the windows and doors push in and out because of the wind. I "think" that I can... I'm not sure as I'm not deaf, but can feel my ears pop and feel the house "move" with the wind and the change in air pressure. Not movement like an earth quake (what fun!). <--yeah, I'm a little "off".
