Colorado

So much hatching going on that my itty bitty is thinking she wants to have a go at it. I may have to let her (with eggs that are fertile of course).

Snowing like mad here now and windy on top of it. It is starting to stick to everything so I am keeping a close eye on the trees and shrubs. The gardens will either make it or not at this point. Many things were still in seed form so they should be ok if a little over watered.

Hoping these flowering trees don't get to heavy with snow. Oh and there is a little bee in the tree when I took this pic. Just realized I actually got it in the shot!

Question for people who know more about hatching: I just had my second chick hatch but I noticed there was blood with this hatch.

The first chick that hatched this morning didn't have this. Is this a bad sign?

It seems like that is a sign of too quickly hatching. It didn't have time to pull the blood from the membranes. ( I think anyway?) I would just leave it rest in the incubator and either it will be fine or not quite so much. I have not had one do that, but that is what I would do. Just give it some time.....

Uzi, I have seen that with goslings in an assisted hatch. They all made it through ok. I hope your little ones are doing well. I know there are others on here that have WAY more knowledge about such things then I do. Just sending good vibes for your little ones and encouraging words for you.

:D A year to the day of my Phoenix Bantam hatching, I got my first Ayam Cemani hatched! There is some white, which if I were a breeder would make this one a cull, but I'm not & I get to just be excited! The other 2 AC eggs & the black Phoenic Bantam eggs are all chirping, 1 is externally pipped. I'm not sure how long you should let them be internally pipped & chirping before you need to assist a little, so I'm going to go look for that info. Hope everyone is doing okay in the "kitchen sink" storm (it totally wrecked my flight pen).

:weee. :ya congrats and how exciting for you. Looking forward to all those pictures :pop

@carajoden & @Hayduke27 :welcome and welcome to the family.

Ok so today you all know the deal with the weather. Got those two week old chicks outside with a heat pad brooder in an uncovered run. Made several checks on them to find various things. The first was they were outside the dog kennel chirping wandering around, so I checked the cave temp it was 60. So I turned the heat pad back up to 6, I had turned it down to the #4 setting due to all the nice weather we had been having, checked later and they were snuggled under and it was 73. Later found them out with the adult flock, they had escaped from a gap I left in their enclosure. They were just hanging out under the coop with everyone. I added more straw to their brooder and re-arranged the heat pad, so the heat pad hangs down on the side of the shelf. The chicks have been smart and have been standing right up against the side and roof of heat pad, which is exactly how this was designed. Just like a broody they snuggled up to the heat with their backs and sides, can't get much more natural than that and it's a hell of a lot better than those blasted heat lamps. Last check of brooder it was 80 degrees, was able to coax them out with some FF and a cooked egg.

Thank you, @COChix! Just had the 3rd one pop out about 15-20mins ago! Only 1 left working its way out.

(this one is a Phoenix Bantam, the last egg working is the remaining AC).

:D

Still light flurries, but I think probably pretty much done here. Final tally ~4-5" of heavy wet packed down snow + maybe an inch of rain before that. Real light drifting, nowhere near the wind they forecast. Nice moisture gain from it with little to no bad effects. Hope y'all fared as well.

How about you high(er) mnt and foothill folks? You were supposed to get hit much harder than where I'm at, or further south down by the springs?

Here in Loveland we have about 4 or 5 inches of very wet very heavy snow. It is still coming down at a slow rate. The shrubs are all flat again. Like really really flat. The lilacs are 7 foot tall and now lay flat on the ground with the exception of a couple branches. The tulips are also flat as are the shrubs in the front yard. I will be going out soon to shake snow off the peach tree as it is bending under the weight.

If plant damage is the worst I suffer from it I shall count my blessings.

Uzi, Congrats on the little ones making it out of the eggs!

COChix, They look to be doing quite well. Very adventurous to be heading over with the big chickens. The 4th pic down just peeking out is so cute.
