Colorado

HI JOE!!! Long time no see! How is it going since the move?? Good I hope.

I am just guessing here BUT sonetimes if a hen can see the other hens bottom when they are laying an egg they will peck at it then. That can and usually does draw blood, that triggers more pecking.

Are the nest boxes nice and dark? If not how about adding cute curtains? Cute for you, added cover for them.

Pshaw Perchie! I been invited! Doing well 21Hens. I still visit you guys to read up, but not much to contribute anymore being way down south here now. Had a good chuckle reading about your hen's butt in your face episode... No emojis so can't input the laughing toon... Hope all is well with the Colorado group.

Doing well here. Way more hawks around then in years past. It seems that the gals can be out for about an hour before one shows up. Makes me miss having fox to worry about. At least they head off when I let the dogs out.

I don't quite get it with the leghorn being a parrot impersonator. They are supposed to be a twitchy breed. So far none of the ones I have had were "normal".

Not sure if I posted this pic here yet.
Bitty did a grand job as mama last summer.

I had read that curtains would harbor mites, but I might try your suggestion. The inside of the nesting box is painted dark brown, but plenty of light shines in the open side. Thank you!

The curtains can only harbor mites IF the mites are already in the coop.

You can make them from a dark shower curtain so they are not woven. That way when needed they can be wiped down easily too.

Getting icy here in Loveland. Be safe everyone. Hubby called to let me know the roads are getting iced over.

Hey there Margie. Even when I was there I never had to deal with the same winters you did... something about altitude! Sorry it's been a rough one for you. Hope you come out of it in spring in good shape.
