Colorado

Anyone heading to the stock show this year? I've been here 20 years and will finally be checking it out this weekend (or monday). Hoping their are a bunch of chickens there, but it looks like the poultry competitions were last weekend, anybody see that?

I live out in the eastern plains and last week, we got colder than you, -28°F that night and about that for several more. I do not heat my coop anymore, have not for years. All my birds do fine, I just keep them inside and their doors closed. My silkies even have frost on their backs in those temps and I have not had one case of even frostbite. My theory is if you add in heat, the mixture of warm areas (from the heat lamp or whatever) and the cold air mixing causes condensation in the air, contributing to excess moisture and encouraging colds and frostbite.
My friend has lost like 20 birds already int he past two weeks from some kind of respiratory issue, I have not even had the sniffles.

I am in full agreement. I have one RIR Cockeral that got nipped and he was in the best insulated coop that I have. Leave em alone I say

I am pretty sure the birds are already judged but I think they need to remain for the duration of the show. I know last year I was there on the last weekend and the chickens were still there.

Large fowl was pretty scarce I thought but Bantams were not bad. I dont know one silky from another but there seemed to be a good number of them.

For me if the large fowl is scarce it is not a great show, but that is just me of course.

Sorry I was wrong chickens are long gone. I must have seen them on my early visit last year or they changed the weekend of the show which I doubt anyway no chickens

Come down next weekend for the draft horse show. One of the very best in the country. This year we host the finals of the Six horse hitch series the top 12 hitches in the country have been invited to participate based on a point system. There will 17 hitches in all competing in the open show.

Awesome draft show.

I have announced it for the last several years. Still gives me chills to see those guys pounding in the ring.

Anyone local want to try and hatch out some quail eggs? I set about 20 or so and a lot looked to be clear. The others didn't hatch so I don't know if my roo is a dud or if my homemade incubator isn't doing its job. The eggs would be free, but you have to come down to Security/Widefield to get them.

Oh man Zilla! My little Black Silkie Beebers is broody AGAIN! and she's sitting on unfertiled eggs since I'm having to get rid of all my chickens but 2

The chicks she hatched out last are now 10 weeks old (I only have one, the other baby was taken by a hawk) and she's been sitting again now for about 2 weeks. I wish we were closer.

Cara - its been 10 weeks already? or, it's only been 10 weeks? Not sure which way I feel

Sorry one got picked up by a hawk. Any signs of what sex it is? I'd love to see some recent pics!

I went to the Stock Show last weekend. Specifically to see the chickens and the Alpaca/Llamas. Alpacas & Llamas were GREAT. Chickens - eh not so great. I agree, I raise large(standard) fowl and there are rarely more than one or two of any variety in the large breeds. The chicken show earlier this fall out in Commerce city was way better. About 4x as many chickens - even though most of those were also bantams. Geese, Turkeys, pigeons... Not so at the Stock show this year. It was my first year going to see the chickens so i don't know how it compared to previous years.

I get frustrated not being able to find anyone to talk to about their chickens. Or not finding anyone form the host club to talk to and sign up for membership. You would think they would be taking advantage of the PR and getting their name out there. It just seems like the show people are in their exclusive little club and don't care about any new people. Sorry, didn't mean to rant, I just get friendlier welcomes at dog shows and we all know how political that arena is.

Most of us showers did not attend the stock show this year. They crammed it all into one day, release was late at night, and the show was on the third floor. The stock show people have no idea how hard it is to get all those birds up 3 flights of stairs with only a hour to do it all in. Thats all you get really to bring your vehicle up to the building otherwise, you have to walk the whole way out like the visitors. Plus the cost doubled. Stock Show does not have a HOST club. But, the president of MY club (Colorado Poultry Association) Has been there every day and is handing out flyers and membership apps.
Honestly, you cannot judge people at the stock show as not being around to talk to about birds because of where your at. Most of us do like everyone else , there is so much to see and do there we do not stick around all day and wait. If you want to talk to the breeders, go to just a poultry show instead of the stock show. Try the feather fanciers show in October, or the CPA show in April. I know the CPA welcomes all members, the Feather Fanciers are more of a cliche than us for sure. I am secretary of the club. Or maybe try the State Fair in August, I heard they are getting more and more birds every year, but,, they might be about the same as the stock show. I am planning on attending that one this year if I can get off of work.

The birds in the show are released the same day. The only birds that are kept there the duration of the show are the sale birds, which, were not allowed to be brought in until the bird show was over and all birds were out.
