Silkies are sooo cute at the show. They seem like a lot of work to bathe them. I like that Turkens have half the feathers (half the work!!) Do silkies do well in the cold weather here? I've heard different opinions on that.

Yes, that would be our president Eric. He sells feed and sells LOTS of birds every year (Hatchery ones and others that his kids raise for show.)

Silkies do fine here in Colorado, however, mine do not go outside in the winter, mostly because they have such large crests they get lost a lot and forget the way inside. When its cold, I prefer them in and they do not like the snow. I do not bathe mine unless they go to a show.

I think I still have a pair of silkies for sale at the stock show.

I'm over in Olathe, the land of Sweet Sweet corn lol. Seems like we're getting some more WS'ers on the post that's AWESOME!

I've just won some Aruacana hatching eggs and hoping to get some decent ones to show and start a breeding program. Haven't seen anyone list them out this direction so that should give me a fairly "easy" ribbon by default I guess. That is if I can hatch them, since that darn tricky rumpless gene can be fatal and all

Definatly going to look at that Colorado Poultry club. This crazy chicken lady LOVES to gab chickens and would love to help bring the hobby to more of a forfront for people.

There is a laying flock of 1 yr old NH reds (and a leghorn) for sale on craigslist in Bennett. Seems like a healthy, robust group of hens, $10 each.

Hello, Denver chicken owners!!

The movement to support Food-Producing Animals (FPA) in Denver is kicking into high gear. Sustainable Food Denver is working to lobby City Council to pass an ordinance that would allow a limited number of FPAs (hen chickens, ducks, and dwarf dairy goats) without an expensive and time-consuming permitting process. To learn more about these efforts, please visit http://www.sustainablefooddenver.org

HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are forming council district “Action Teams” so that we can arrange targeted email campaigns. When you join your district's Action Team, you will be occasionally asked to send an email to your City Councilperson. We will provide a template email that you can cut and paste, or you can write your own.

PLEASE EMAIL Sustainable Food Denver now at:

[email protected]

and let me know which council district you live in, so I can add you to your district's Action Team. If you don't know which district you live in, click on this link:

http://www.denvergov.org/denvermaps/

Enter your address in the box in the upper right corner. Scroll down to see your council district. Occasionally the website doesn't work, so you can also call 720-865-9534 or visit http://www.denvergov.org/citycouncil

Please
email [email protected] now to sign up for your district's action team. Just a couple of emails from everyone who supports FPA could be the support we need to make these important changes for Denver!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Thanks for that question, Farmerlor. Even though ultimately councilmembers are only accountable to their constituents (and so, technically, those are the only people whose opinion they care about) we always use additional emailers, even if they're outside of Denver.

1. Email [email protected] and indicate that you're willing to send an email when it's necessary. There will be times when we'll need lots of voices.

2. Join our facebook group at:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Denver-CO/Sustainable-Food-Denver/202473173070?ref=ts

to stay updated on our progress and hear the latest city-chicken related news. It's great for our number of "fans" to continue growing (currently it's over 400), and you may have some insights that would be helpful to our cause.

Thanks to all the chicken supporters out there!!

That is so exciting!! I just got back from Seattle where we visited someone who had goats and chickens in their urban backyard!! They had two sweet, little, pregnant, dog-sized goats that didn't smell at all. I was so happy for these people. It's been legal there for a few years. My son lives in the capitol hill neighborhood and it tickles me pink up to walk down the street and see two or three chickens in someone tiny front yard. I sure hope this happens in Denver!!
