Colorado

I have a question for my fellow Coloradans....sorry if this shouldn't be posted here but I thought I'd ask locals instead of the whole forum.

Do any of you have a problem with your chickens feet cracking due to the dry climate here? I'm new to chickens and we have a chicken with what looks like dry cracked spots on the bottom of her feet. I'm not sure if it's Bumblefoot or just Colorado dryness; however, she is favoring the foot, but it doesn't appear swollen. Her foot/leg is a dark color so there's no defined black spot as I've seen in pics of Bumblefoot.

Here's a pic:

Thanks for any insight!

Wouldn't that be awesome!!! My hatch rate from shipped eggs this year has been TERRIBLE!!!!! I mean TERRIBLE!!! I haven't totally committed to coming yet because we have soooo much going on at home this weekend, but if a bunch of BYCers are going to be there, I'm not sure I could pass up the chance for a group hug!!! How will we know one another? Name tags?! Yellow t-shirts? http://www.pic4ever.com/images/balloons.gif

Oops . . . yellow is the one color that is not in my closet!

Still thinking about wearing my very suggestive t-shirt that says "got chickens?"! And I will be the one trying to drown myself in coffee!
This is my first time at the swap - so I'm not familiar with the parking lot or any good meeting places. Not even sure how big this place is. I Googled myself a map, so hopefully I know where I'm going.

Lol, I plan on buying a one liter of mt dew, one of pepsi, and one of dr pepper - md is mine, pepsi is CJ's and the dr pepper will be Jeans, I'll need the bribe to get her out of bed that early!

I haven't been there either, but I googled it as well, and someone here gave pretty awesome descriptions/directions so I think we should be ok!

honestly, that kinda looks like the feet of some of our birds (when you can catch them that is!

) and i haven't noticed any of them limping or anything. I don't think its bumblefoot, I had to actually stop and fully look at the pic before I saw what you were talking about

I'd love to meet the infamous Wifezilla in person, instead of just in the forum! I love your great ideas, and hints and such. If I can ever con the inlaws into getting off their hindquarters and using the tractor to dig me that pond I want, I plan on using some of your ideas for growing flowers and vegetables around it. It wouldn't be the same without having you there!

Hi DJ and welcome to our own little chicken thread. I do see where you're talking about on her foot. It does look like something is going on there. Maybe an old infection??? And the fact that she's favoring it says something also. Not sure what you should do though. If none of us locals know what to do, then post it in the emergencies and owies (forgot the title) thread. One of the other BYCers should be able to help. Good luck

Thanks for the thoughts. I looked at some of our other hens feet and they sort look that way. Maybe she's just limping because she jumped off the roost wrong - she is one of our bigger girls.

I think I'll post it to the "owie forum" just to get a few other opinions. If it is Bumblefoot I'd like to catch it early.

BTW, I'm in Calhan - east of Colorado Springs.

Thanks!

Howdy fellow coloradoan's!
We live north of denver, east of boulder, south of ft. collins/greely in the Longmont area. We are looking for someplace/someone to get straw. Doesn't have to be the highest quality, I plan on using it for mulch and bedding. Does anyone know where I can get it, preferably local and not at someplace like Jax or Murdochs?

Thanks!

Hi there, fellow Coloradans! I just made my profile this morning, and thought I'd come in here and say Hi and introduce myself. My family started this crazy backyard chicken journey this spring, after we got two white silkie hens from Cara Smith. Now we have three pullets, too, and they could not be more fun! All our birds are bantams, as we live in a subdivision. (Not that we know that, here on the "farm.") We started out, after the silkies, with a shipment of 7 baby chicks, with three of them promised to another couple. We lost a little blue silkie within a day or two, but the others did fine. Until the day a blue jay pecked my little black frizzle (who was just starting to frizzle) in the head and she fell down dead

The cat killed that blue jay the next day ... karma! Other than that, we have had such a great time. I'd love to get to know other chicken lovers in the area, and I'm always interested in batams--frizzles and easter eggers or americanas, esp. (no roos!) Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

this here is a great great site!
where are you in colorado? lol, thats funny about the subdivision. At some point we will have all sorts of commercial/residential stuff on the one side of us and there won't be anything they can do!

karma definitly is a beautiful thing, I agree. Are you coming to the poultry swap in brighton bright and early tomorrow morning?
