You might want to get a water tank heater, rather than an aquarium heater...the aquarium heater can melt the bucket if you aren't careful. A just get one that floats and it won't touch the sides or bottom and melt it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually cycle the heater and the bucket is metal. It will turn on for a half hour after an hour. So it never gets a chance to get too warm...plus it's shatter proof!

Metal is good! BTW, I was heavy into aquariums and even "shatter proof" heaters will shatter. I had an oscar who hated the red light on the heater when it turned on so he decided to break it...

We have 9" of snow on the top of the chicken coop! And it's still snowing. We are not in the mountains or even the foothills so this IS unusual! The last time we had a snow this heavy it was December several years ago. We lost a second tree; in the front yard this time. It fell on the driveway. Thank goodness no cars were parked there! Our trees still have all their leaves since fall really just started here so the snow packs on them and weighs them down more than if they were just bare. It was 76 two days ago! Checked on the girls and they are perfect. Not fluffed up or acting cold. Turkey (our cuckoo Marans) came running when I opened the coop door and skidded to a halt when she saw the snow. She poked her head out and studied the falling snow and the snow on the ground, then turned around and went back to her roost without even stepping foot outside! LOL No thanks! I threw some BOSS in there and gave them fresh water. I am thrilled that they seem to be very cold hardy. It's been low 20's without them even fluffing up or acting cold! I do have to wonder if anyone is going to lay an egg today or if it's just too cold and dark for it....

Yep I see a trenching job in the future but way in the future. DH tends to wait to do things until the consequences of not doing it have already started. I tell him I can do some of these things but he always comes back with "No, I'll get this weekend or tonight after work, etc....." So a very, very, long extension cord is my next request

Souns like you are all cavorting in the snow!!! Up here we have had 0.8" of rain. Pours down hard at time and mostly drizzles. Did chores way earlier and everyone is fine. The girls were all excited because they know that in this weather they get warm treats. So warm oatmeal with peanut butter, corn meal and mealworms. They went crazy. Typical fall weather that will change in 24 hours. Be careful if you have to drive!! People get crazy on the snowy roads. Got the wood stove going and I think that it is time for a cup of hot chocolate!!

You have me seriously regretting my decision to come into work.

I'm at work right now, too.

Last thing I want is to be considered non-essential personnel. LOL

I work on Fort Carson and wish sometimes I fell into the non essential personnel

My girls have never seen snow before! They apparently chose to spend the day up on their roost

. I did get one egg (I only have one laying) and they ventured into the run for some scratch. Then right back up!

The good news: my newly constructed (June) roof to the run (all hardware cloth) is holding very strong under 6" of snow!
The bad news: it's so dark in the run that the girls won't go out, and I'm sure it is going to MUDDY in a couple of days!
