Chicken salad bars-- I plan on making a few when I construct more raised beds for my veg garden in the spring. The garden is protected from the chickens, no worries about that, but I cam going to plant all sorts of things for the chickens to eat, too. Has anyone ever made a chicken salad bar? What fence do you use?? I am planning on digging down a few inches into the ground and then run posts in the four corners and then attached the box with wire on top to that...chicken salad bar, aw yeah.

But what do you guys grow for your girls? I plan on spinach, kale and lettuce, but I think I'll grow marigolds as well-- what other plants do you suggest???

Can you tell its snowing like mad outside and I'm getting some Spring planning done?

Its still young, but my guess is male.

I put a very nice blue mottled cochin pair at auction https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=605154 Am happy to sell locally, can save on the shipping cost.

Also have a pair (pullet & cockerel) lavendar (self blue) silkies $40, pet quality, early fall 2011 hatch. They have light eyes, red combs. Rather try locally first, best to email me if interested.

Ryan, go easy on the high oxalate plants like spinach. Too many interferes with calcium absorption. My chickens love beets and greens, turnips, lettuce kale, good old grass, dandilions, etc.

Thanks Margie, re the spinach. I'll just leave that for us, then... but it sounds like I have rest of the plants you mentioned in mind!

Aw...what a cute pair. Are they a roo and hen? I'd love to get silkies but am not ready to add to the flock. It seems like winter would be a tough time to add them, no?

Thanks all for the tips on spinach and sprouts!

Can anyone out there help a rooster in need??!

Compass Montessori in Wheat Ridge raises chickens with their students (awesome!) but apparently they wound up with a rooster. Here is their posting that went out to parents this week:

The WR Upper Elementary is looking for a good home for a four month old leghorn mix rooster. This last summer we received several chicks that were all supposed to be female, but.... This little guy is beautiful and well behaved as he is used to be being held and picked up by the kids. We just can't have a rooster with our "girls" for obvious reasons.

We would really like him to go to a family with the intent of letting him happily eat bugs out of your garden for years to come (vs. the stew pot). If you are interested or if you know someone who is, please contact Scarlet Parenteau at 303/420-8288 in the Fire Room or at [email protected].

I am not connected with this school, but a friend (parent) there asked me to pass this on! Actually, she asked me to take the rooster...but that's not gonna happen!

-9F forecast for my elev in Parker on Monday... and another round of snow. My poor chooks haven't left their coop in days. LOL Bunch of wimps! Only one egg, too, but to their credit they worked hard on it as it was a big egg. LOL

I'm headed out of town for the week so I'm topping everything off for them and wishing them the best. A family member is house sitting and has been instructed but with all this snow and cold I doubt the chooks will even come out. They had better at some point, though! All the food and water is outside of the roost area where they stay. Hunger is very compelling, even at such cold and snow!
