Started smelling the smoke down at my place yesterday afternoon. Today I can really tell the effect of the smoke, even this far from the fire. Sore burning throat and sinuses. Must be absolutely horrible for the firefighters and also those closer to the fire.

Be safe everyone.

Yes, just watched the news conference. They said they are expecting southerly winds today which is good in that it will make the fire move in a more northerly direction. The bad part of that is if the Hwy 24 corridor acts as a funnel, sending it more towards the Woodland Park area. Also if the winds get as high as 30-35 MPH it will affect the ability of the air support by grounding the helicopters and making it more difficult for the fixed wings to hit targets.

All current evacuations are still in place.

The Elbert fire is reported to be 80% contained at 600 Acres.

ETA: the Waldo fire is at 0% and something over 3,400 acres as of 11:00 pm last night which is when they can measure it.

That is why I am happy the smoke has not hit here, I am asthmatic and that is miserable for me when it does. I just hope they get these fires out soon, it look like we should get some cooler temps and rain in about a week.

Yesterday early evening (about 6:00 PM) I went out to the chicken yard and found the temps at our place had dropped to 96*. It felt quite pleasant.... I think I have lost my mind: 96* pleasant? Of course, it was 110* at 1:00 PM.....

We kept a small sprinkler on in the pens yesterday and it gave them cool water and puddles, which they enjoyed. So far so good with the chicks handling the heat. The oldest ones are 8 weeks now.

Just bought 60 2X4s to be picked up on the way home from work. Got to get the hen house finished. Ok, started........ The sheathing, 4X4s and cement are in the yard and ready to go.

It will be 10' X 12', and will house up to 20 hens and two roosters....I think.....Maybe.......15 Dominique hens, 5 EE hens, 2 Dominique Roosters.

Currently we have 20 Dom pullets, so I will need to get rid of 5. 1 or 2 to Sharon (Dufus or Gardendufus), and 11 Dom cockerels.

We also have 15 EEs, of which I think 8 are cockerels, so we will need to process or otherwise get rid of 8 EE cockerels and 2 EE pullets, leaving 5 EE pullets.

And then there are the two Narragansett turkey poults.

Thinking of building a pergola structure to shade chicks. Has anyone tried this. I have some extra 2 x4s and thought of building one minus the deck.
