Colorado

I need to go out and clear our fire lines. Grass fires are our worry, they move very fast and burn very hot.

Now that I'm home alone and the hubby is out of town, I'm worried about fire here. We're on a semi-major road out here and it will take nothing to spark our field. Do you have any good references for preparing my land. I haven't got a clue and we've only lived in the plains since last August.

We created fire lines by making a 5 ft wide "path" that meanders around the perimeter of our property, and another pathway between that one and the house. Clear all combustibles from around any buildings fences, etc. Basically, you create defensible zones around your home. Make sure you have at least 100' of garden hose and a nozzle attached. Make sure you know where all gas and power shutoff valves are, and that you know how to turn off the gas if needed. I got info off the state forestry website several years ago, and applied the concepts to grassland.

wsmith....you amaze me more and more. Very Cool.

So.......
I went out to work on the hen house foundation boards with my friend Dale from Seattle... I was attempting to insert a screw, and Dale was holding the boards..... Dale had just cleaned out the post holes.... The Phillips head slipped off the screw and went into Dales hand, and he yanked his hand away, pulling the drill out of my hand which put me off balance. I put my left hand down to catch myself, only to put my hand into the post hole, which went to the bottom. Dale is holding his hand thinking bad thoughts, while my face is stopped from hitting the ground by the blade of the shovel. Good news, the shovel is OK. Dale has a 1/4 inch deep hole in his hand in the shape of a Phillips head, while my face looks like it got hit by a shovel. Oh yeh, it DID!
Laughing as I write this, and making my face hurt.

That's quite impressive. Usually, you only see that level of FAIL in the movies and they have to plan it.

I hope the two of you feel better soon.
