It was funny, I walked in to show my chickens to my mother-in-law and I only just noticed...They are huge! When did that happen?

I was out working in the backyard last weekeknd and 2 little boys poked their heads over the fence. One of the little boys says to me, "Hey where are the little chickies? My cousin wants to see them."

I said replied, "They're right there under the tree in the shade."

To which I heard, "Those aren't the chickies...those are chickens."

LOL, a friend of mine who was with me when I went to get them came over after not visiting for a few week walked in and said about the same thing but I really didn't realize just how big they have gotten till yesterday.

Off to the Denver Botanic Gardens for the backyard chicken raising class(9am). I will let you guys know how it went when I get back.

my kids keep telling me the same thing. They also tell me that we need more chicks because ours turned into chickens. haha

Yesterday was hatch day. I had 2 sets of chicks in the incubators. One set of 6 eggs from my flock that are RIR and the other set of 13 shipped silkie eggs from the West Coast. As of today, all of mine have hatched, even a porous one that I wasn't sure of. Of the 13 shipped eggs (i got 18 but only 13 made it past day 7 to be under the light), 5 have hatched, with 1 more that has pipped. I kept my incubator temp closer to 100 and humidity 45% until the last 3 days where it went up to 65-70%. My hatch rate is not great but I am happy. I know how hard it is to hatch at this elevation from sea level and the first set of eggs had a 0 hatch rate. Hatching starts in the video around the 6:20 mark.

Good morning everyone! So how did everyone like that rain yesterday? Man was there alot. My chickens looked like a bunch of drown rats when we got home. We weren't anticipating real rain so the windows to the coop were open and everything. Then, when I went out to change the jackets on the girls, I found out the roof was leaking right onto the roosts. I stapled up some trashbags to channel the water away from the roosts in the dark. Whee! That was fun.

Some pictures:

Thankfully we didn't fill this food bucket full.
