Colorado

Well, hope the girls are in a little better mood today. I finished closing off a portion of both the coop and the run yesterday so that I can bring in Wendell's pullets and keep them separated for awhile. Believe me they weren't happy to lose any of their old stomping ground. The area of the run I closed off happens to be their favorite late afternoon dust bathing area. They spent the entire afternoon/evening pacing the new fencing. My Wellie kept eyeing the top of the 4' chicken wire as tho calculating how much wing flapping to get over it. I may actually have to extend this all the way up to the top. Oh good, more overhead work.

They got even by not laying an egg yesterday.

Well that was interesting in an icky sort of way. Thanks Dennarahl. Looks like they fall in the normal. I waited and watched them all this morning and all of them had a "looser" poo. They are still on crumbles but I had been throwing in some chicken crack and meal worms. Maybe I should just give them their crumbles for a couple of days and see if it gets better.

Can grass and weeds cause problems? When I get home, the kids and I take them out to the yard and let them enjoy the grass for a few hours before going back in to their run/coop area. They peck and eat at the grass.

What do you guys feel about getting them vacinated? Thanks Chick in the Burbs and Ghillie for the reference of Dublin Animal Hospital. I have written it down along with Dr. Roeder's name. The girls came from a farm up in Black Forest and they are 8 weeks old. I think I will buy some de this weekend and spread it in the pen, coop and grass to lessen the flies (which aren't bad but I don't want them to get bad). I am using hay in the coop (we had a friend who gave us three bales that he didn't need). Do I need to de-worm or de-mite? I haven't seen anything but want to make sure everyone is healthy and happy.

THANK YOU again for helping out a newbie.
Changes in Diet and surroundings can bring about slight feather loss due to stress, and diet changes will nearly always result in some stool changes. At 8 weeks, their systems should be able to handle the changes easily, and their stools should be "normal" again very soon. Heat stress also can cause runny stools.

We could always have a BYC colorado people shooting activity...We have a range across the road. To walk it is exactly 6.5 minutes. To drive it is about 45 seconds from the house. We have it marked out to 400 yards if you are so inclined. Just let me know and we can do a pot luck BBQ!

That would be an awesome afternoon...and as a bonus, I'd get to see a few turkeys.

Lets do it! From you it is just over 2 hours to my place. We can do black powder, modern center fires, we can even shoot my little cannon....Yes, I have a cannon, albiet a small 1/2 pounder.
The turkeys are growing VERY fast, but a couple of the dom pullets have taken to pushing the turkeys around. I'm surprised at this, because the jake does not take any nonsense from the cockerels at all.

We'll need to set a date...

I think we found a non-HOA rental! Hopefully we can take possession in a few weeks. The owner and neighbors have accepted the coop and chickens. Which leads me to my next question..... does anyone have a BLRW pullet for sale?)
