So, I've found some one in Falcon that's selling Cochins, but I have a question. My 5 girls had their Mereks shot at the hatchery, is it an issue if the new ones don't have it? The lady has day olds, 2 1/2 weeks and month olds. I'm very nervous about adding to my flock, but want a few more before the season ends, and figured a breeder would be a little better than rolling the dice with Big R. Any advice would be great.

Most chickens now are naturally immune to Mareks. But some can still get it so a little on the vaccine. Mareks vaccine is often an attenuated vaccine using non-virulent form that gives protection toward the virulent. Think of how cowpox use to give humans immunity to smallpox. It works the same way.

There is always a risk of adding to your flock from people that you don't know. Personally, I'm comfortable adding to mine from people that I go back and forth with to their houses and areas. It's a little different with people I don't know. You could ask to see the area you're picking them up from but that isn't always a good indicator either. Some chickens actually have a better immune system coming from a little dirtier coop environment. Avian flu isn't a concern right now although I believe our chickens could get that from wild birds. You and this lady both live in the Falcon area so have somewhat of a herd immunity already because of the migratory pattern of the birds there.

I always quarantine birds for a week or so anyways. There is too much stress putting a new bird into an environment where they don't know the other hens. Just get a wire dog kennel, put in in shade with water and let them get to know each other without too much interaction. If you pick up a bird that has something, it really won't matter much if you quarantine them because often its the shoes, hands, clothes that spread the ickies around...just like in humans. The quarantine is helpful in that a stressed bird can get sick from things it ordinarily wouldn't get sick from.

So just do the typical quarantine/separation period. Let me know how it goes and take pictures.

edit: obviously if you go the wire kennel thing, you'll have to bring them in overnight and during the hottest part of the day until they can co-exist without wanting to kill each other.

Well we have our coop in the barn, so it's fully shaded. I was thinking of using the big inclosed baby gate. That way we can move them in and out easily, while they all get to know each other. My girls are 6 weeks, does that make it a little easier to mix them?
Thanks Coloradogal, for a while I thought I'd never be able to mix in new birds without it killing off my flock.

OMGosh! It makes it soooooo much easier to introduce them. I was picturing pullets. You should be fine.

I always introduce them, make sure the newcomers have a place to run to and watch. If it looks like they are blending in, I let them be but check on them every half hour or so. Baby chicks are the easiest to blend. When they get older and bigger, I like making sure they can see each other for a while first.

I suspect they'll be one big happy family by the end of the weekend, and I know that is tomorrow. Just watch and make sure. Their birdie hormones haven't kicked in yet. Everything is easier when the birdie hormones aren't on. :)

Just got back from the fair. There were some beautiful animals there. I was drooling over the banty cochins for a bit. Really liked the white and the barred. Drooled over the d'uccles too.

Who am I kidding? I think I left puddles all over that barn...

Well I just back from Agrifeed in the siprings. A few months ago I posted how nice they were. Three trips later I'll revise my assessment. Not so friendly to "non farmer" like myself. Rather rude honestly.

So anyway, all bitching aside, heard of a new place in the Springs that Carries chicken stuff and what hey don't carry they will order. http://buckleyshomesteadsupply.com/. On Colorado and 15th. I have yet to go in, but I have heard good things. I'm going to try and swing by this afternoon.

Circle F on Garden of the Gods road is really nice. They don't have the canning and soap stuff but they do have all kinds of feed and seeds/treats. I will defiantly check out Buckleys at some point though. I want to start canning and making my own of what I can so I might learn a few things there. :)

I went to the Renaissance Festival last weekend, just to look at the shops we were there all day.  I got my husband in to a kilt.  :weee

I don't see any cleaning in that schedule, make sure you take it easy we all had a bit of sun sickness when we got home.

I'm glad we went early, once the sun came over and obliterated the shade I was done. We had fun, but I definitely uderstand why I haven't been before. Its too darn hot. I'll go again when its raining. I never even thought to get my hubby in a kilt, I totally should have. Halloween is coming, maybe I'll make him one then.

Just stopped by...very nice. pretty small space, but lots of practical stuff inside...lots of organic feed, scratch, corn and more... feeders, waterers, hay etc.. Really nice person who owns it who was very helpful (she has chickens).
worth a trip if you're in the springs.
