I would make sure it is not a dust reaction first. If they have a viral issue, antibiotics wont help. Try some Poultry RX in their water as that really helps the sneezing and respiratory system. If they come down with a bacterial infection, then you can use antibiotics and stick to the directions exactly.

Amen Sister! I love that stuff. You can humidify it too. :)

Does anyone here make their own chicken feed?

I had been thinking of making my own, then I was on Craigslist one day and saw that some one in my area makes and sells feed. You go and pick up whatever you want. I'm sure if you went to the springs section of craigslist you could find him. They said they make all kinds of feed, and I believe organic too. If I come across it I'll post a link for you. The prices looked pretty good.

OK. I refuse to make the post "Is my chick a roo?" in the raising chicks section, but...

Do signs of rooster start to present themselves as early as 5 weeks? Guessing it is waaay to early to know, but one of my chicks has a comb developing much sooner than the other 4 and the thing that actually concerns me more is his/her tail feathers are pointing "up" rather than "back" like the others...am I being one of those annoying hyper vigilant (over vigilant) chicken freaks or are the tail feathers a decent indicator?

I found it

I know you wanted to make your own, but figured this was the next best thing.

You're a gem! Thanks for finding that. I was looking into some of the homemade recipes and buying human grade bulk seemed to come out just a little more than what I'm paying now. I suspect buying animal grade would be a little cheaper with some of the 5 grain mixes working as a good base.

My ducks love the rain but sadly, we did get some hail two nights ago. A few of the youngest babies had no idea what was going on and were trying to huddle in a corner. So like all over protective chicken keepers, I run out there with a swimming towel draped over my head and shoulders and dragged them into the coop. The ones under the outside coop were safe but not the ones hiding in the corners. Hail hurts.

Wait until their first snow and their first blizzard or even first snow is higher than they are experience. That's when things got very, very real for me. :)

Oh, the heart attacks and the sleepless nights worried about them... At least once the coop is done I will have less to worry about. We are building them a nice coop with insulation and a porch. It is a good solid design that is made to move if necessary. One of the reasons it is taking so long to finish, the weather is another.

Don't worry from all my post you can tell I an one of those 'annoying hyper vigilant (over vigilant)' types too. I know that on my EE the tail feathers were not an indicator, hers are long and round off like a male but I was told that they would change with the adult feathers. Most stuff I read looks at posture and the comb as the final deciding factor. If it is slightly pink I would give it some time but if it is already deep red then I might post on the "Is my chick a roo?" forum.
