I am going to be listing my three big chicks in another two weeks. Two are defiantly Roos. Blondie's comb has a distinctly red tint and is catching up to her red bro's in size. Do you have any recommendations on rehoming to screen for people who will just name them Stewie and BBQ?
Well, I suppose you just ask them and hope that they are honest with you. I would be. I would tell you he will eventually be eaten, and then you wouldn't let me take him.

Of course, I wouldn't have responded anyway after reading your requirements, I.E. no kill, pet only, etc, And that's fine. I would hope that those who want to eat them wouldn't respond. I don't like dishonesty.

If only we could breed for a higher rate of pullets.......

This is my thinking on roosters... With straight runs, there are always roosters. I wish they would get along better but generally they don't. I'm hoping my colloncas will and then perhaps with their genes mixed, their babies will be commensal creatures. I butchered Nemi, my RIR, even though he was very prolific. I miss him but know that I have his younguns in my flock. I chose the best eggs over the course of about a week and a half and got not only an incredible hatch rate but nice, large chicks.

By getting rid of an older roo, it makes room for the younger ones. Nemi is making room for his babies now.

I give my roos to people who will treat them kindly and butcher them quickly and away from the rest of the chickens. It is usually just one every once in a while.

pichuris: Nemis boy is a RIR. Both parents survived last winter. Mama is still laying at my brothers house and sadly, Nemi has been gone a few months. Nemi was a medium aggressive chicken. He got along fine with other roos unless they came after him. He didn't try to fight through fences and mostly, was just a good roo. He was a bit too amorous for my small flock though. I had 10 hens and even with just him... he was constantly riding them. But I had an incredible hatch rate with Nemi. His little roo was born on the 7th of July and is looking very nice.

Last Edit: Nemi also took good care of his girls. He survived two dog attacks, both times he had to be nursed back. Part of why I wanted his genes so bad was because of this. I feel bad when I think of him and his end but know that there were younger roosters that also needed a chance to live more than a few months. Nemi lived a good live and his babies are now in two flocks, mine and chick-in-the-burbs. I want a landrace flock and am glad that his babies will be part of the founding base. Let me know about Nemi2.

Speaking of roosters. I am in need of a RIR. He can be young or mature.
Hope everyone is having a fabulous chicken day!

I have an RIR x SLW chick that I believe is a roo. That cross is supposed to be sexlinked, and compared to the other one I'd say its a boy. If you're interested, I'd want to hold onto him until his mama is willing to be done with him. He's only 2 weeks old now. I've got 10 more eggs that will hatch in about 2 weeks, but they're all going to be barnyard mutts. I will be able to tell which ones have my RIR as a daddy though because the other two daddies have feathered feet.

I read once that incubation temperature had something to do with ratio. I haven't been able to find anything more on it though. Does anyone know?

In my listing I don't mention anything about not being dinner. When I talk with them on the phone I'll talk a little about the chicken in question and then ask them what type of setup they have and what they do with their chickens. This usually works but if you tell them right out not for dinner they usually respond, "oh no I would never think of him/her as dinner" and then that night they are having fried chicken.

Sorry should have been more specific. I need purebreed. Thanks for thinking of us.

You know I heard this too from my grandmother. Hotter temperatures you get males and lower temperatures you get females. But where that came from who knows.

I remember from some nature shows I watched that that ran true for reptiles. That entire hatches would lean 90% towards one gender based on the temps. I think it was about crocs, specifically. Not sure if applies to birds though or they might use it to influence endangered bird hatches more. :/ It would be nice though.

I have heard it too off and on over the years, but then others have said, that while true for reptiles, it doesn't really work that way for poultry. I read somewhere on another thread a while back that referenced a university study on it. Apparently it was sponsored by the egg industry. It didn't work. For the most part, hatches will give us about 50/50 pullet cockerel regardless of incubation temps. That's what i read.

What a weekend, got a nasty gram from my HOA about my hail net and chickens. Asked to come to a hearing in 2 weeks
I know they are just harrassing me, so I called Code Enforcement and Animal Control and asked both to come and inspect me
and write up a report. They said they have never had anyone call them selves in !
If I am doing great, good, and if not then I will have to abide by our crazy HOA.

Today Code Enforcement came and was sooo nice. Gave the officer a full tour of my coop and run, my girls were utterly quiet and
she was totally impressed. She said it was immaculate and she would write me a great report to take to my hearing.
one down, one to go!
