What a weekend, got a nasty gram from my HOA about my hail net and chickens. Asked to come to a hearing in 2 weeks
I know they are just harrassing me, so I called Code Enforcement and Animal Control and asked both to come and inspect me
and write up a report. They said they have never had anyone call them selves in !
If I am doing great, good, and if not then I will have to abide by our crazy HOA.

Today Code Enforcement came and was sooo nice. Gave the officer a full tour of my coop and run, my girls were utterly quiet and
she was totally impressed. She said it was immaculate and she would write me a great report to take to my hearing.
one down, one to go!
YES!

Nothing better for people to do then just complain. Argd.

Great news with code enforcement.

Looking for- a place to process ONE chicken!
I've got a chicken that has to go. She's been a pain since the day I bought her (and expensive!! What was I thinking!!) and she's NEVER laid an egg and now she's breaking eggs- I lost TWO (of the three I get!) to her today. I'm done. She is SO going in the stew pot.
I know for SURE it's her, I've had her in isolation and no eggs were broken. And I know there are things to do to get them to stop, but I don't have time, and this is the straw breaking the camels back.
I'm in Littleton. I'd like to find some place (or someone?) close. I'm also willing to trade her to someone for a processed chicken. She's about a 2 year old barred rock hen.
Please help!

When I had a separate coop, I weatherized the windows on the sides because the roof has plenty of ventilation. The thing to be most concerned about is drafts in the winter and of snow blowing and getting inside. I suspect being in Springs proper, it should be much easier to keep the massive wind gusts that I get all the time out here on the eastern plain in the fall/winter. I gerry rigged up a heavy duty commercial outdoor fabric curtain that I could encase the coop in during the blizzards. During the day, you might have to find a place for them to hang out as most backyard coops are rather smallish during the wicked blizzards. On the awesome hand though... the bad weather isn't that often.

Just remember, if you have to choose ventilation of warmth, always go for the ventilation, not drafts though. If your good at building on, you could build on a small section to the front where the trap door is with just inexpensive plastic stapled to a cheap frame to help keep the snow from going into the coop and also to provide them an area during the day a little warmer to hang out in.
Thanks Colorado Gal for the winterization ideas. Those are really great ones to consider. Anyone else have any ideas also. I know it may be early to think of winterization but we are going to be gone the first two weeks of October....we have a chicien sitter for that time but we want to be prepared before we go in case the temps dip down to freezing. Will keep in mind to opt for ventilation ovver warmth for sure...someone suggested we put vaseline on the combs to help insulate them from the cold. Thanks everyone!!

Our health insurance company, bless their hearts (and believe me, I'm glad we have them) are telling me that Beth's chest drainage supplies are "disposable medical supplies" and don't cover them! I have a call in to the surgeon so he can apply for a pre-auth that would let THEM decide if they will pay for them or not! I am SO IRRITATED!!!!!

Seriously?! This is why no one respects/likes insurance companies. They nitpick their coverage so badly you never really know what they will cover and what they won't.

Stupid insurance companies...

We often had to go through either the insurance agent themselves or the company that manufactures them. Often they will have programs for people who cannot get insurance coverage and then either give it at cost or give it to you free. There is generally paperwork involved but no more than you would normally have to do.

It's not like we pay $191 twice a month, and my employer pays twice that. Oh wait, WE DO! Ya, thats $382 per month! And That's just MY share!
