YEs! It COULD be a torture device..... Ior! Get me......(music DUh Duh duh) the chicken plucker! Yes master as he rubs his hands together.......I LOVE the chicken plucker!.......

We put the 4 chickens being transported today into the portable wire dog kennel last night. This morning they appeared VERY confused.......

heading out to deliver chickens in about 20 minutes.

Okay Colorado folks -- I need help! We currently live in Texas, but my husband has been transferred to Denver, Colorado and we will be making the move in December!! I am terrified! I've always been a Texas gal, have had no intentions of leaving the state, and am NOT terribly fond of cold weather! But - I will just have to adapt! My question is, what is the best way to transport our girls during the 12-14 hour drive to Denver? Obviously they will come in the vehicle with us so they temperature is regulated, but ..... Dog kennel? shavings in bottom? covered, not covered? Also, is there anything I can do to prepare them for the change in temps? It will probably be in the 40s here in December, and we'll be going into the teens (or so I've heard) Any other concerns I should be aware of?! and BTW... all this talk of frost and snow is really concerning me -- I will need a full body parka to live in year round! LOL thanks! Rhonda

I haven't transported any longer than an hour, so keep that in mind. We use a small pet carrier for a single bird. I put puppy pads down for the floor. They have some texture so the birds don't slide around and absorb the wetness very well. I agree with doing a mash or food. Before the move you might train them to use a cage bottle waterer. I'm my experience the chickens will hunker down and not move much when the car is moving, so you'll probably want to stop often and give them a chance to move, eat and drink. Depending on how many you have, there is a soft dog kennel thingie at Walmart that is really big, about 2 ft square that is about 4 ft long.

When you're looking for housing, youll want to be careful about the place you choose to live. In the city of Denver you can have up to 10 girls. In centennial (I think) you can have 3. Other than those I'm not aware of any Denver metro cities where you can have chickens. However, its not hard to get at enough out of the metro area where you can have them and still have an hour or less commute. (I live about 35 miles east of downtown, the regular commute is about 45 minutes. I used to live 11 miles north and the commute was 45 minutes to an hour) If that is what you need to do, going east and west will give the shorter commutes. West is more expensive than east, but you're getting the mountains. East will be more like Texas, people and summer climate wise. In the winter east and north get snow, but not as badly as the west and south side of Denver.

Don't worry about the snow at all, its just the first of the season so everyone is excited. We don't get that much snow in the Denver metro region. Its cold a lot during winter, around 40-50 most of the time but its a dry non penetrating cold. We only get real snow (1+ inches) a couple times a season. I am one of the crazies, I wear sandals and dresses year round except the few real snows. I couldn't do that if it was as bad here as they make it out to be on TV.

Brrrr.... might have missed their first but there are many more days for them to come. They're gonna gets lots of practice. *Do I get bonus points for using there, their and they're correct in my reply? :-D
Geez ColoradoGal, I REALLY want to give you the bonus, but I read it through twice, and I can't find a use of 'there' except for where you are begging for points!!

Your masterful use of the other two, however, is noted.

After leaving Mos house, we went over to Rock Ledge Ranch to drop off three pullets. They have 5 BO hens and one BO rooster. The guys (I forget his name, must be that I am 51 as of yesterday....) was surprised that we could just reach into the cage and pick up the pullets...... Anyway, we put the pullets into the pen with the other chickens. The Doms peck around an little, and all of the BOs are on the far side of the pen. Then it happens.........the doms walk towards to BOs. You would have thought aliens had invaded! The BOs were running back and forth against the far fence, trying to get away from the evil Dominique invasion! We were laughing our heads off! Even the BO roo was squawking its fool head off trying to get away. The Dom pullets finally went back to eating, while the others ran around in panic. Dominique's RULE!

In Denver you can actually only have 8 hens. I know many people do not get permits (I found this out on a coop tour hosted by Botanical Gardens) but I got one for 6 just to be safe, it only costs $25. You can also have 8 ducks, but the max of ducks and chickens combined is 8. Also if you want, you can have two dwarf nubian goats (females only). I highly doubt that there is someone who goes around checking coops to count the number of chickens.

So see, MO didn't really tell a lie. It WAS for an anniversary dinner. You guys enjoy. You deserve a nice time out.

And Wendell, it's looking more and more like I will be adding a beautiful, but bully GLW to our little party whenever we have it. Might give her away, but I fed her for all this time, I should get SOMETHING out of it.
