We have never had bumblefoot either. Five plus years and meaties and hens and roos. (~100 birds) Maybe, we live in rough country and the chicks all start playing king of the rocks as wee little sprites and by doing so, toughen up their feet so nothing could ever even think to be able to poke in their feet. Maybe? Perhaps you should add some really rough granite boulders to your run and test this hypothesis.....

I was planning on doing something like that in the new run, just so they had things to play on when I couldn't let them out. Right now, they like to play climb the pallet shades. I also think I have their roosts too high, but that will be fixed in the new coop that won't be done soon enough in my opinion.

Got the roof on the work shelter yesterday afternoon. For some reason I can't post a photo while at work, but I posted a photo of it on our Windy Ridge facebook page.

This afternoon I want to get a good start on the work bench.

Note to self:

When balancing a #50 bag of cracked corn on one shoulder and carrying a
#75 bucket of wheat in the other, don't try to open a door and then go through the doorway..... You may end up banging your left ankle with the wheat bucket leaving a HUGE bruise...

I have caused more damage to myself this past year building the chicken facilities that the last 10 years put together....

Remember the shovel incident?............

Ouch. And double ouch for the shovel incident because I remember that cause it made me hurt just reading about it.

I should have said carrying the bucket in my left hand, aqnd bruised the inside of my right ankle. And there there are all the slivers and scrapes from handling the lumber. Not complaining, making an observation. It's alot of fun building this stuff. The oldest son got the small motor working, so I can now start putting the plucker together.

Speaking of chicks - Mayah, any update on your new babies?

I haven't been online much the last couple of days. My Mom is coming in on saturday to stay a few months with me. That means cleaning and cleaning and a little more cleaning.

The chicks are doing great. I lost one to failure to thrive but the other 5 are big and healthy.

I can't figure out my chickens lately. I go from having 12 eggs one day to 3 the next. My ee's seem to have decided to barely lay any at all, which is frustrating. I know its the time of year but it just sucks.

you're braver then i am letting your mom stay for months. I can't handle my parents for more than a wk at a time. lol.

My ee isn't even laying yet! She's 27 wks old! ugh. My others are laying normal still.

Coloradogal- Hats off to you. I can usually only tolerate various members of my family for three to eight days, depending on exactly who it is.

My EEs have stopped laying too, but they are in full molt mode too. Good grief they look bad! They are finally in the growing back stage but it sure took them a while to get there. No tail feathers, Scrambles went bald on her head and Sunny went bald on her wing tops and across her shoulders. I am only getting eggs from Velvet now. Good thing I didn't have any major baking plans.

I am near Monument, and my Norwegian Jaerhons keep on laying like little energizer bunnies while everyone else has gone into a molt. Several of the silkies molted really early and have begun to lay again October, which is really weird for silkies. EEs that were hatched in March finally just started to lay. I am looking for show-quality guineas - does anyone know somebody in Colorado with those?
