So I decided to pop my head out and say hi, been sick and still am but missed the chats. My girls look ready to lay but with the cold weather I think they will be holding it in.

W. How is Beth doing?

OK so far. Doctor appointment tomorrow afternoon. We anticipate that they will do some blood work and see if the kdney finction is still good. She is still very tired. This is the new normal for us. Good thing is that she is down to the low 170s in weight; though we don't reccommend the weight loss program......

BTW, there is something very relaxing about chickens.....
Sitting in the hen house, low clucking, sctatching about, some in the nest boxes, etc....... Just about went to sleep out there, but was afraid I'd get pooped on.....

Ok so I now have 9 pullets. One of my doms started laying a couple of weeks ago, making 6 layers. Yesterday I got another small egg that I assumed was from the second dom, which would give me 7 layers. I have seen no sign of an EE egg yet.

Today I got 8 eggs. TWO tiny ones. One from the newly laying dom I assume, the other from????? All of the eggs are some shade of Brown, so I'm thinking NOT from the EE? Anyway 9 birds, 2 of which are EEs (green eggs?), and 8 brown/tan eggs. I'm confused. My first thought was that I left one out yesterday. But (a) I checked the nests after they had gone to roost last night. And (b) even if I missed one, none of the early morning eggs were "oops I got left out overnight" cold.

Will EEs lay brown eggs?

Interesting. As far as I know, EEs will not lay brown eggs, HOWEVER...might it be a "pink" egg? We would get pink eggs years ago from our EEs. Nothing to show for my EEs yet though, same batch.

So Heather (oldest daughter, 21) just had another run-in with Cockerel #11. Scratched her on her arm with his beak. So I went out with her and had her go up to him until her flared his hackles at her. I was standing next to her and gave him a swift kick that sent him flying.... He isn't hurt, We then ran after him and chased him. He was standing in a corner when we left the run. So now we have a problem. I sold my only other "good" standby rooster. I still have #23 who is very even tempered, and looks better than #11. #17 isn't a good breeder choice because of his bum toe. I wanted to keep a backup rooster, but i WILL NOT tolerate that kind of aggressiveness.

EE's can lay brown eggs. All it takes is not inheriting the blue egg gene from either parent. It happens sometimes. :/

I don't blame you Wendell, I would be concerned as well. Have you read about Rock Ledge Isle's method of teaching a rooster his place by treating him as if he was your hen? He describes placing a hand on his back and forcing him to squat like a hen and holding until he stops struggling. I'm sure he can do a better job of telling you, this is the Judi's Digest Condensed Version
