Colorado

Well, I'm not going to make it to RMFF. :(. DH came home last night with a 'to do' list that was longer than I was expecting. He said I could still go if I wanted to but it felt wrong to leave him to clean and run chores/errands while I went off to look at beautiful birds. And taking DS along and trying to manage rehoming Big Red w/o DH to manage one or the other for setup would have been a pain.

Those of you that went, let me know what I missed!

I've gotten 18 chicken eggs and 3 duck eggs in that last two days. I know that at least one of the red stars is laying. I have a new ee laying and I believe it's Wendell #1 as my others aren't old enough yet. I suspect in the next 3 weeks, I'll be eating lots and lots of eggs. :)

edit: half the eggs are still little, little eggs so can't do much with them other than eat them.

what do I do if it is an egg eater?
I didn't get any eggs yesterday which I thought was strange. But today I definitely saw the smashed up eggs and yolk in the nesting box.
How in the world do I solve this problem?
Do I up the amount of regular food? Quarintine the guilty chicken?

One solution is to blow out a shell and fill it with something they would hate, like spicy mustard. There are other solutions around but it's a hard problem to cure as I understand. And the main offender could teach others too. :(

Well I am tired! We processed- 2 of us with a chicken catcher helper and plucking by hand 52-17, that's 35 chickens today. Started at 8, did two in one hour due to training the newbie and then rolled until 1:00pm, half an hour for clean-up. We will do the rest tomorrow.

wahoo! Today was our first 3 egg day!
Our Dominique has been laying for about a month, my Buff Orpington followed 10 days later, but my Black Austrolorp has been the slow poke. Today she layed!!!

2 weeks ago I got 4 new chickies! They are now 10 weeks old and half the size of my 3 big girls. I have them separated and they are getting friendlier every day.

This is Blueberry a Easter Egger

Speckles, a speckled sussex

here is my run divided in half with the 3 big girls on one side and the babies on the other.
Both sides has shelter, food, and water

Butterscotch- the sweetest and most cuddle, an easter egger

Lacey- Silver Laced Wynnotte

Lacey looks like my Arry when she was little.

help!
Today I found two eggs smashed and eaten in my nesting boxes. What do I do????
UGHHH!!!

Probably just soft-shelled, maybe they were startled shortly before their regular laying time, I had that happen three times, first time I was pretty unsettled as others here can attest :) On the Old Timers thread, Beekissed says this happens annually and resolves itself; it may or may not be related to higher protein needs, and may just be a fluke as it was for me.
