Hey guys and gals! Praise The Lord, we got a shipment of 9 baby chicks (pullets) with one not making it. They are supposed to be colored egg layers, Lord’s Willing!! There was a whole string of potential birds that it could be, but it was just a random assortment, with no guarantee of what breed you would get. Who wants to take a guess?! We are clueless! I tried my best to get pics, but honestly, some of them looked so similar, I’m not sure if I got them all! They were not in a picture taking mood either, but y’all have good eyes! Maybe you can piece together something!

I added one of all of them together at the end. I know the picture taking “guidelines” suggest against this, but I did it simply because I’m not sure if I got them all individually!

It would probably help some to know which hatchery they came from, since that narrows it down to breeds they sell. Also if you can do a post for each chick that specifies their leg color and any other features (feathered vs clean legs, if you can tell if they have a straight comb or not, etc) that can help a lot too. 😁
I’ll see if I can find the hatchery! My Mom actually placed the order, a local girl did a huge fb post and ordered a TON of chicks to get the cheaper prices, so I’ll see.

As far as combs go, everybody seems to have straight combs. And I didn’t see any feathery legs, but I’ll take another look. No clue about leg color, they’re feisty little things! They did NOT like picture time 😂
Thank you for the helpful hints!

If they all have straight combs, odds are you have green or olive layers, or of course they could lay brown, tan, white, etc. Most of the time, blue egg layers have a pea comb, (although there are exceptions), so I don't think you have any of those.

I’m gonna ask a silly questions, but is this a pea comb?

No, but I'm not sure what it is instead. Can you get a straight on photo that's nice and clear? Maybe rose or walnut comb?

Pea comb picture is attached. The gray and black chick and black chicken have a pea comb. The red/white mix hen has a single comb. Chicks are a few days old, hens are 6-8 weeks.

Found a good example of pea comb in a young pullet. First two pics are a black pullet at 4 wks old.

Also, pea comb in a cockerel is generally three rows of dots, and they get larger and redder sooner than the pullets do. The last picture of the chick on the hardware cloth is of a cockerel (probably) at 4.5 wks.

Aww, cute birds! I’ll try when I get back to the house, Lord’s Willing! He or she has the weirdest looking comb I’ve ever seen, we’ve never had anything but straight combs before this critter! (The last pic is of a different batch of birds.)

Definitely not what mine is… we have a mystery comb!

I looked up the different types of combs, maybe a strawberry or cushion comb? I had no idea there were SO many different types!!
