I am looking for advice on the best breed(s) for colored eggs. I really would like the friendliest breed since I keep them more as pets. The eggs are just a bonus!

No one is going to agree on the "best" breed. We all have favorites and think they are the only one to have. Personally, if I were to pick one single breed, for colored eggs (not just the blue/green kind), I would go with the Easter Eggers. Yea, I know the purist chicken owners will say they're a mutt breed, but I've found the ones we've owned to be quiet, calm, friendly and they lay nicely colored eggs. For us, they have been late (older) to start laying and are not a high production bird. However, they seem to lay better through the winter and produce for a longer number of years.
At the present time we have Marans, Austrolorps, NH Reds, Easter Eggers and various mutts of unknown heritage. Probably a mix of different Wyandotte varieties, Orpington, EE and whatever else we may have kept.
