Hi there. :frow

I don't see ANYTHING that looks like chocolate. And the one you are calling mottled really isn't in my experience.

The Silkie is female. Your female Serama looks partridge in color. Too me you'd be lucky to get $5 each for those Serama boys. We process our boys for eating, even bantams. I sell females according to age and all are equal in value. Very young $10+, close to lay $25, JUST laying $30.

Your "mottled" boy and others... have very HEAVY indicator of either lice or mite damage to feathers... can you see how hollow looking they are... or essentially missing the barbs that make them look like solid feathers near the edges? It doesn't mean you are a bad keeper, it mean your birds face nature. I highly suggest using a permethrin based product, I prefer spray...

Part feathers below vent, under each wing pit, and to the base of the head where it meets the neck... administering a SMALL spritz in each location. Retreat in 7-10 days according to direction for correct parasite. It comes in other brand names and sold in the equine section at feed stores. PLEASE... I KNOW my stuff... heed this specific advice... and DON'T waste time trying to use DE as it is often ineffective. :)

Cute birds... good luck! :fl

I don't use DE as one of my birds got a respiratory illness from it and died shortly after plus like you said ineffective. I use permethrin spray too.

Thanks for the mite/lice Indication but I checked them earlier today they don't have any. It may just be the angle of the pics...they are still young 15 weeks on the 24th and are mostly feathers right now they should even out soon.

The lady sold the male to me as chocolate he must just be poorly bred he was chocolate colored as a chick.

Sorry to hear about your DE experience. :(

The mites I face don't live on the birds.

Don't take my word (or anyone else's) as gospel. The more I learn the more I realize I still don't know... :old and oddly enough not all breeds call their colors the same thing... for example Partridge in Welsummer or Cochin is actually called Silver in Ameraucana. Black Copper in Marans is called Brown Red in Ameraucana. I have NO experience with Serama... I always wondered why people run their colors together instead of taking the care to keep them pure. I thought it was basically laziness or lack of facilities... but I'm here to learn! :pop

I don't dare say someone was poorly bred (usually)... In breeding what I have learned is NOT all chicks will get the good genetics EVEN from the best of parent stock. So please know I didn't mean judgement towards your birds, I am not qualified... though when asked will help look at the standard of perfection and try to identify faults.. cuz chickens are fun and I enjoy helping people... with an eye that sometimes easily catches certain details.. The more experience you get things POP out at you.

The feather damage I speak of... it's possible it's left from something you already treated... But assure you it is not the angle or the age of the bird. This image is to show you the type of damage I am seeing..
body-louse-jpg.jpg

See how none of the edges are held together like a solid feather? It won't even out, what I am speaking of. If you click on the images you posted and zoom in another click it becomes easier to see. Sorry for being pushy, about it.

Good luck finding new homes! :fl

Where on the birds do you see the damage?

If it's the silkie yes she had really bad mites me not noticing all over her body. But I just treated her and they are all gone now.

The hackle feather of these two is where it is most obvious. See how the edges of the feathers are NOT held together but very frayed almost to the shaft? Zoom in if you need to... it's the only way I can see anything.

This gals feathers look like heck... but could partly be age/wear related if she is going to molt anytime soon. The boy doesn't look bad.

This gal has very minimal damage like just an eighth or quarter inch of fraying around most of the feathers.

I learned how to post links and such... now I have to learn how to enlarge and circle points of interest in the pic on my computer... never stop learning! :)
