This is my 18 week NHR. Never had a grown hen before, so don't know the usual rate of growth. But it seems to me her comb and wattles are awfully small. The skin around her eyes is usually bright red, but sometimes turns yellow. She also tends to stand with her eyes close, but only around 6:00 pm. Is she just a slow grower or could there be a potential health issue. She's still eating and acting pretty normal.

You can click on the photo for a closer look.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Looking for any help! Thanks!

I can live with a slow developer!!!!

Good to know someone else has the same thing going on. So do you think the standing and closing her eyes is regular hen-like behavior, too?? I'd be just fine if it is!

Not that I know much, as I'm new to this, but here's my experience.

My 20 week old LB still doesn't have much of a comb, but they are starting to turn pink.

My RIR was a VERY slow developer (also 20 weeks old) and it seems like her comb and wattles started coming in fast a few days ago.

Thanks! Can't wait for that day when they start coming in really fast. I think I'm just a worrier since these are my first hens. Exciting, though!

New2Chooks - Where are you in Northern California? I'm in SF.

My 16 week old EE has the same pale comb and wattle. She's small for her age so I think she's a slow developer too.
The one who had the comb and wattles coming in bright red turned out to be a BOY so be glad she's still pale!

You're soooo right! I did have a BR who started sprouting head gear at 8 weeks and was indeed a rooster! Given that perspective...small is good.
