I am trying to learn about chicken genetics and have some questions. From what I understand there are four major alleles that control comb variation; rose, pea, duplex - V, and duplex - buttercup. I was looking at this comb chart and noticed that the different comb types shown are only caused by a single allele, or in the case of strawberry, cushion, and walnut are all from the same combination of rose and pea. What happens when rose and one of the duplex alleles are combined? Or pea and duplex? Or rose, pea, and duplex? Is there a chart or book that details all of the possible comb variation?

She has a rose comb, but because she is heterozygous for single comb, it looks funkier than usual.

Thank you very much!

Yes from when I have seen pure-bred Leghorns, they had single combs. I guess one of Chamomile's parents had a rose comb. I don't mind at all - she's so cute!

All my Hy-Line hens have single combs, but their necks, hackles, coats, and tails are different.

I am wondering because I have two Hy-Line and three Light Sussex pullets, so are yet to grow their combs. I am curious what their combs will turn out like. Meanwhile I can hear them in the background having a party on my front porch!

Some Leghorns have rose combs but it's not advisable to breed them with single-combed Leghorns because the single combed gene will ruin the shape.

Pretty chooky!

Is she a brown-black Leghorn?

For the record - Chamomile was from a fertilised egg given to me by the stockfeeds shop. The lady said that the eggs will be of "Leghorn cross" breed. I guess that Chamomile's father was/is a white Leghorn rooster. I don't know the genetics of Chamomile's mum.

She is a light brown Leghorn (genetically gold duckwing.)
