Comb infection?

My darling Gilbird has had this spot on her comb for quite some time, it has not worsened or gotten better for months. It doesn’t seem to bother her, but it’s definitely not SUPPOSED to be there 😅 I’m wondering if it’s some kind of infection I can treat, or something I need a vet for. It goes straight through to the other side, where the hole is smaller. It feels like a hard lump. I’ve been cleaning the surface of it, but I haven’t picked at it or anything.

You could pick at it to see if it would come off. If it bleeds obviously you dont want to cause pain. I have not seen anything like that, i would try to see if it comes off without bleeding or causing injury. It looks like necrotized skin, but it's not hurting anything being there either. The comb is strong and highly resistant to injury, so can withstand removing it likely.

It almost looks like when mudballs get in crannies on the feet and build up over time leaving a pocket (a couple of pictures below to see what I'm talking about). It could have been a small injury that has encapsulated. You could try some decolorized iodine, and a bit of vaseline, see if it will loosen up and come out. It looks more like a little capsule imbedded in the comb to me, rather than part of the comb.

I’ll give it a try! If I manage to get it out though, I’m wondering how to patch up the hole it may leave. It goes straight through the comb. (I used to use cut up teabags to cover wounds when one of my hens broke her beak, maybe that’ll work on the comb too?)

It goes through to the other side?
Interesting.
If it leaves a hole, just pack with triple antibiotic ointment or you can lightly paint the hole with Iodine. Probably will close up in a few days.

If you take out the scab, please take some photos so we can see:D
Sounds good! Will do!

Well that was something I hadn’t seen before!
