i went out to feed my birds the other day and had to do a doubletake. My barred rock has no comb. The entire thing is completely gone with just s black scab over the spot it occupied. Its not infected and the hen is not acting abnormally so a) will it grow back? B) what are the possible consequences of this?
I have no idea how this occurred, although I have a suspicion that she got herself caught in the fence and yanked it off. A few days ago I saw her stick her head through a chain link fence and get herself caught for a moment when trying to get back out.

It will not grow back. Any chance it may have gotten frostbite and then fallen off ?
No it definitely wasn't frostbite.
Temps have been in the 40s. Im really at a loss, but as long as shes ok I suppose life goes on, although Id like to set my mind at ease as to the cause.

The poor chicken. It must look gross. :sick
Honestly when I saw her I just thought something looked slightly different. Looking hard I realized the comb was gone. It just looks like a slight black line where the comb used to be and is not gross at all.
I feel bad for her because I imagine it mustve hurt coming off, but shes acting normal and is not being bullied in the slightest.

Poor thing! Ouch! She will be fine, but it will not grow back. And no blood everywhere? My girl lost a chunk of comb I assume got stuck in the chicken wire and it turned black and fell off. Now she just has a shorter comb. It was pretty bloody.

No, no blood at all. If you didnt notice the comb was missing you wouldnt think anything was wrong.
