Comb question BCM's......breed standard

I am confused...........(very easy to do btw)

A few weeks back there was a question about the number of points that someone's BCM roo had.

A reply to the question from another member stated that there was not a number of points specified on the comb standard for the breed.

Then I am searching along and find another posting that states they should only have 5 points on their combs.


So folks............... what is it?

I found the same thing in something I read, 5 points. I would love for someone else to chime in here.

The standard being submitted to the APA specifies 5 points on the comb.

You can find the standard at the Marans Chicken Club USA web site. Go to http://www.maransusa.org , then click on "proposed APA standard".

Ok, so what I have always wondered is this: does the point on the lobe or the front piece constitute a point? Or is it every thing in between?

Maybe a dumb question-I dunno.

I am just not entirely clear on how to count the points.

European countries, the UK and Australia have individual Standards for each breed. Some breeds such as Langshans may have an ideal number of comb points as 7, Japanese bantams may have 3, in other Standards,such as the Marans, the number is not specified ,probably because the original breeders didn't think it was of great importance.
The APA differs, all single comb breeds must have 5 points, one size fits all, no variations so as not to confuse the judges.

The standard is specific, 5 points being perfect, In australia, australorps are judged, 4 through 6 points are acceptable, 5 being perfect, try to choose birds to pair with it that have better points. No side sprigs, lopped over, DQs someone posted pictures in here and you can look it up easily on google chcicken standard combs, shows you correct and incorrect.

In my opinion this area is often overlooked when breeding and its now a set problem in many breeds and tough to get right. I select starting with the comb and DQs and work my way back to a tail that might be a bit large, that can be corrected with more ease. I now have 4 hens and one roo with very good combs, one stands out as being very good 5 points and no kinks or twists, I had to sift through a lot to get this and plan to keep it a priority.It gives you an edge when showing. I have one pullet that will be going to 2 big shows next year, I think she can hold her own out there. She just gets better every day. I can try to get a pic later this week front and side close up (australorp hen). trust me, I threw out a lot to get her. I knew I had to do some serious culling . My other pullet just got BOB at a small show, but I Tink this bird is much better.

Would this 5 points being perfect, be the same for all color varieties of Marans??
