If my lemon hen (diluted gold) x silver rooster had a cockerel, could I get some lemon chicks if I then bred that cockerel back to his mom (lemon hen)?

Probably yes.

And also if hen 3 (silver dad x golden mom) had a cockerel with a silver rooster, would that cockerel carry gold? Or would it be random whether or not he carries gold?

A hen is either gold or silver. She cannot have both genes. You formerly said hen 3 looks silver, and you say she has a silver dad. So I'm pretty sure hen 3 is silver. She does not have any gold genes, so she cannot give any to her chicks.

If the silver rooster is pure for silver (no gold gene), then all chicks must be silver, with no chance of carrying gold.

If the silver rooster carries a gold gene, then he could give it to his chicks, which would mean some sons carry gold and some daughters are gold.

So it will depend on the genetics of that silver rooster.

They would be roughly the same (though of course there is variation.)

I would expect at least some to be the same shade.

I don't know if you would also get lighter and darker ones. Maybe?

This is more fun than serious, but would anyone like to guess which is the mom of my flock leader and only rooster, Cinder?

I hope Vulture is the mom (for breeding reasons). Honestly the moms look pretty alike except for the fact that Vulture is a different color.

Also, another thing to note…
Cardamom laid only a single egg in her life before getting killed by a coyote. So if she is Cinder’s mom, it means Cinder came from a pullet’s first egg. (Can pullet first eggs be successfully hatched? I assume yes?)

In 4 days…I should have a better idea who Cinder’s mom is since his offspring (him x Vulture) are going to hatch. If Vulture is indeed his mom, there is 50/50 chance of lemon chicks (the color that vulture is). Of course, if the chicks all turn out white, it doesn’t mean for sure Cardamom is his mom but just most likely. I say this because there are only 5 eggs, which is not enough for me to be sure.


But really, what do you guys think? Which hen is actually his mom? Give me your best guess!
