Hi all! I have a five week old chick whose comb was bright red, but part of it is now faded to pink. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Comb color can increase or fade at that age. Generally it's based on exercise or excitement. Temperatures too can alter the color. As long as he is eating and drinking, and running about I wouldn't worry. If he acts lethargic there may be something else going on.

Are they let outside at all? I agree with oldhenlikesdogs that it can "flush" depending on what they are doing. But anemia is also a possibility, just means the blood is going someplace else. Maybe mites or ticks, other creepy crawlies. Give them a good once over and if their temperament isn't different they might just be using that blood to grow more feathers ;)

They do get redder when excited, but that chick is definitely a cockerel.

They do go outside during the day. I better look it over better tomorrow. I did lift the wings and look at the skin for lice or mites and didn’t see anything. I’ll have to look more tomorrow. Thank you!

I’m refusing to admit it’s a cockerel. It’s so beautiful I don’t want to have to give it up 😢 I’ll keep playing dumb until I hear the crow! 🤣😁

Yeah, sorry. It's always sad when the sweet ones turn out to be boys. Good plan! Lol
