Hey just had a new batch of chicks, their dad is a barred rock and don't now what their mom is. But I was wondering if the comb if the chick would be the same as their mom or their dad? If you could help me with this situation it would be very appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to BYC. Rose, walnut, mulberry combs tend to be dominant over single combs. However if the parents are not pure (homozygous) for comb type anything pretty much may be evidenced in the chicks.

I have no idea! But it sounds like Sourland has given you some great information.

Good luck with your birds and it is great that you could join our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2 the comb types will get confusing in mixed breeds, you maybe able to figure out who the mothers are of some of the chicks if they have different combs than the BR father since other comb types are dominant, here is a link to a page that explains the basic comb types http://sellers.kippenjungle.nl/page2.html

Birds that get early red comb & wattle development generally are cockerels, they may also be larger and have thicker legs than females. Pullets usually have smaller and light pink combs etc. When they are approaching laying age - their comb and face turn red.
