Stupid rooster

The chickens were out foraging and one young rooster was at least 100' away from the rest of the flock. I heard him clucking and cooing and saw him doing his dance near the bottom of a Rocky Mountain juniper. From the distance I could see a dark form on the other side of the tree trunk. I assumed that he was trying to sweet talk one of the young hens but was I wrong. When I got closer to the rooster, I could see that the item of his affections was a big black tomcat that was actually stalking him.

Of course the cat took off in one direction as the rooster went the other way. I thought later if the rooster was too dumb to tell the difference between a cat and a hen that I should have just let the cat get him. Hopefully he learned not to try to romance any more cats.

Our silkies used to live outside in a Puppy kennel. Mice would chew the netting and make holes so they could steal the silkies food. so i sewed patches onto it. When our baby chicks hatched we moved the silkies into a coop and the babies in the kennel and put it inside. well, baby chickens will peck at anything to see if its food or not. They ended up pecking at the string that I sewed the patch on with and they pulled the patch off. Of course being the adventurous little Chicks that they are they decided to explore my room. When i waked in I found them perching in various positions around my room:th. Cleaning up was very fun :sick.

In my room, I have a large tank that I use as a brooder. It's one of those reptile tank things with doors that open in the front and a screen on top. When I'm brooding chicks, I typically keep the front doors open with a window screen across to keep them in but add more ventilation. My latest group of chicks were CX outcross babies. I swear, they got their size from their CX mothers but their brains from whoever dad was. I came home from a swap one day when they were about 4 weeks old...they had learned that they were hefty enough to jump against the window screen, knock it out, and escape. They were happily lounging on the sheepskin rug, for several hours by the looks of it. They just looked at me like "hi mom! Where've you been?"

I also have a sweet tom turkey that doesn't like to share with his fellow turkey mates. I'm not allowed to touch any of the other toms to give them any attention or he will attack....them. Romeo is sweet on me and will "tap dance" for me often. He even got upset the other day when 3 hens were snuggling up for some love and he wasn't in the huddle lol

One day, after coming home late from my daughter's dance class, I went out to the coop to gather food dishes. I'd had one IN the coop that day for some reason. It was dark and I couldn't see well but something was wierd when I picked up the upside down dish. Feeling around for a minute, I found that my fattest, most food obsessed hen, Maple, had managed to flip it over on herself. I have no clue how long she was under there but she just say there in shock when I got her out! She got to come inside for a few minutes to clean the extra FF off her and realize she was safe again...and get a snack of course!

My chickens were out free ranging in the backyard (our backyard is fenced in and everything, so they were not going anywhere besides our yard) and we left for a while and, well, when we came back (we never noticed until the neighbor told us) Creme, our Silver Laced Wyandotte had jumped over the fence and went into the neighbor's yard. The neighbor came up to our front porch with the chicken in his hands struggling to get out and he says "Your chicken was in our yard, here she is back." Since that day, we have never let Creme free range.
