If you aren't diagnosed as mentally retarted, you aren't a tard or retarted. Retarted is a slur and i'm tired of seeing it here. Its not a joke. Knock it off.I googled it. I am totally a tard.
(slang, derogatory, offensive) A person with mental retardation. (slang, derogatory, offensive) A person who acts stupidly.
Used to be is the key word here."Idiot" also used to be a diagnostic term.
Pretty sure that "mental retardation" as a diagnosis was replaced with "intellectual disability".Used to be is the key word here
Yes, it was. That doesn't mean the R-word is, and wasn't a form of hate speech. its rude. If you had such a disability, I don't think you would enjoy hearing that word to describe somebody being "stupid" or "dumb". "Spreading the R-word continues to hurt people with intellectual disabilities—and whether intended or not, is a form of bullying. Using the R-word is the same as using any slur against a minority group. Eliminating this word is a step toward respect for all."Pretty sure that "mental retardation" as a diagnosis was replaced with "intellectual disability".
It seems like the the only real difference between it and terms like "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron" is its more recent use as a diagnostic term. And while it definitely isn't fair to insult people for things they have no control over (whether that be a diagnosable disability or a less extreme lack of ability), it will continue to happen because of human nature. Kinda paradoxical, isn't it?Yes, it was. That doesn't mean the R-word is, and wasn't a form of hate speech. its rude. I don't think I even used it pejoratively here, but thanks anyway for reminding me of my inferior diction. It helps to prevent delusions of grandeur. So I would pick and choose your words a little bit better.
