Yes but when done right it hurts at first then heals quite quickly (from what I've heard anyway.) Frost bite, which is currently a problem that we should have dealt with in a few months - 2 years (new coop with better ventilation), must hurt a lot more (skin rotting off, it takes a lot longer too.)

Example:
Look at Emma prof pic. If that chicken had no comb or wattles would it look like a chicken? No, it would not. It would look like a bloated white pear with arms.
