I've seen them around my place many times......One time in particular, it was a beautiful day, we had all our windows open, enjoying a nice breeze through the house.....I heard one of my hens sound the alarm, and then everything got dead quiet! I ran out, (it was really lucky timing) to see a hawk swooping down towards one of my oldest hens.....(she meant something to me...a pet), and I yelled and ran towards the drama and lucky for me, the hen made it to the bushes, and I think my yelling got the hawk's attention....it flew away very quickly......
I do have the same feelings as you do....I'm not raising my chickens to feed a bird of prey........I like to let them free range though, because I do feel that the freedom gives them a happier life......Just my own personal opinion. I am aware of the risks, and I think the freedom is worth the risk.....
I would probably use the SSS method.......I have never had to though.....Never seem to have a gun handy!
