Commotion at the coop. Wow!!

Guess, I'm a fear some person. Thats cool I just don't like seeing an animal eat my food that I hatched & raised. Thats all seems normal to me.

Maybe to some the SSS stands for Stand Still and Stare, where as others may know it as Shoot, Shovel and Shut-up.

Now that one got a chuckle. Nice.

7L, I'm with you on that one. It ain't gonna happen. Just like I told the wife, I don't plant a garden so the wildlife have something to eat.

So, when something is gonna attack & kill I should just let it. I feed & water these animals everyday & if they get sick its more work & money. Am, I suppose to buy a permit to kill these so called rare birds. The goverment needs to come over here & stay with me awhile. They would then understand what its all about. I love nature, wildlife, & the country but don't mess with my pets or livestock. I tend to these animals everyday I'm not gonna stand there & watch something take one away. If thats how you do it good luck.In my mind they need to amend this law. I'm not saying kill em all by any means. We the people need to have the right to protect our animals. Hanging up CD'S ain't gonna work trust me.

I've seen them around my place many times......One time in particular, it was a beautiful day, we had all our windows open, enjoying a nice breeze through the house.....I heard one of my hens sound the alarm, and then everything got dead quiet! I ran out, (it was really lucky timing) to see a hawk swooping down towards one of my oldest hens.....(she meant something to me...a pet), and I yelled and ran towards the drama and lucky for me, the hen made it to the bushes, and I think my yelling got the hawk's attention....it flew away very quickly......

I do have the same feelings as you do....I'm not raising my chickens to feed a bird of prey........I like to let them free range though, because I do feel that the freedom gives them a happier life......Just my own personal opinion. I am aware of the risks, and I think the freedom is worth the risk.....

I would probably use the SSS method.......I have never had to though.....Never seem to have a gun handy!

Hope your flock has turned up!

our problem around here are the fox... we just lost 5 chickens couple weeks ago!!!! it was our fault my husband didn't get them locked back in their coop before it got dark....

haven't noticed any hawks though. i guess it's good to know it's against the law to kill them, i'll inform my husband just in case!!!

MY husband and I have been talking about this same subject lately.. We have a TON of red shouldered hawks around us and many times I will look out the back door and this is what I see...

Fortunately, the tops of my runs are hawk proof and they'd have a better chance getting into Fort Knox! I know chickens aren't all that smart but they are not stupid either.. If there is a hawk on the run like this one was, the chickens don't pay it any mind.. But, on the RARE occasion I have them free ranging (we have a lot of loose dogs in the neighborhood so it's not often and under STRICT supervision!), they freak out when a hawk gets ANYWHERE in sight!

I am a shoot/shovel/shut up kind of person but I also try to abide by the law and I honestly can't afford the $10,000 fine that comes along with harming one of these birds.. I just try to take the necessary precautions so I don't have to.. Unfortunately that means my birds can't get out and hunt their own bugs or other things so I go out and give them grass clippings and grubs to make up for it...

Don't get me wrong.. I'm not saying that I expect everyone to do it the way I do.. That's just the way *I* do it.. Honestly, if I had a privacy fence (or ANY fence), I *would* free range a lot more than I do...

No 7L. I think you misunderstood what I said. I totally agree with ya. It like I told a sheriff dep this morning. A neighbor I've been having problems with I found out this morning was evicted for not paying her lease note. Well she leaves and also leaves 2 dogs and 4 pups. Some kinda chow mix. I've been feeding them since Friday just so they won't starve. But I told the deputy I would feed them as long as they stayed on the property. But I have chicken lose on my place and if they find their way back on there I'll bury them. They said that's what I should do. For some reason it don't seem right to fatten um up for the kill. I know the Sheriff pretty well and I'm trying to get him to find the woman and prosecute her. He said he intended to.

No no no, if anything comes after any animal on my place with harm on their mind, they shouldn't come here. It ain't safe.

Does anyone have dogs that they use to protect their chickens. My little dog will catch anything if given the chance. Even big birds. But she is a very intelligent dog. I would almost think she was a cat if she didn't look so much like a dog. She will lay and wait things out.
