COMMUNITY PROJECT: Let's Design The Perfect Coop!!!

Go ahead and laugh!! I was actually thinking about building a coop from concrete block!!!

Sink them down one block on top of a strip of hardware cloth. Fill the all blocks with sand for insulation We used to have a storage room where I worked in the mts built like this. Kept fruits & veggies out there all year, cans never froze all winter. Only thing it had in it was a single 100watt bulb. This was just north of Pittsburgh- winters are brutal!!

Thought about it. If I didn't like where I built it I was stuck with it. That's the only thing that has stopped me!

hmmmmm

Summmer coops, winter coops....................hmmmmmmm

Jsto-did you get the pics of your roof yet? I'm really curious. My dh won't be able to finish the roof for a couple more weeks. Way too many honey dos on his list! I think I like the green ondura.

Here ya go Judy! I stupidly forgot to take pics of it from the side, but I was doing it in a rush as dinner was cooking

Probably for the best since the rain has kept me from finishing the paint job on the door and it looks a bit sleazy at the moment!

Like I said, I love it so far. I think it looks great although I was unsure about using the red before (there were only 3 colours to pick from at Lowes and red was about the only one that would have looked okay with my coop.) Laying it on a sloped roof was simple. You have to be careful with the nails so as not to flatten the corrugations/damage the roof, but they are fairly simple to drive...and that's coming from a woman who has never been able to drive a nail without smashing a finger/driving it in crooked/hammering everything but the nail for 22 years

Oh! I just wanted to add that we trussed it up, no plywood under. I think there are...erm....5 (?) trusses.

Thanks Jsto! I'm gonna show dh. It looks so good finished. He said he thought we might look into doing our roof on our house. He said he goes right over the exsisting singles. I would love a new roof. Coop and my house!

Wow! That's my coop. My husband would be flattered. It was not too expensive to build and really did not take too long either. We also thought that if we wanted to increase our flock we could build another box on the other end of the run. But there are a couple of small things that we would change now that it is built:

1. I would make the entire back hinged so that it can be opened all the way for cleaning. We have a door which works- but I also have short people that are happy to do the cleaning.

2. We brought the roof down in order to create more shade because we live in Arizona and it is so hot and sunny- if shade wasn't such a concern I would build it taller so that you could stand in it.

oh wow that's our coop to... Oh dear I really need to catch up my english reading haha maybe ask my brother to translate some things for me

Hello everyone.I've been reading and looking at some pretty good ideas of the perfect coop. I thought I might be able to help a little bit. I just recently built a coop like Monica's. I added some things but the basic design is the same. It works perfect for raising my chicks, they love it, and im getting ready to put a whole different clutch in it and let mommy raise them. On the left where the box is, I got hay for mommy and the babies. I also made the attic on the other end into a roosting spot, just incase mommy don't get along with the ones I got in there now. They have little roost in each corner of the fenced in area and I covered the entire floor with a big sheat of plastic so I could rinse it off with a water hose. I placed a heatlamp over the box on the left that I turn on at night for the babies I got in there now. There is one thing I shouldn't of done. I painted the ramp leading up to the box.(bad idea). They was sliding down the ramp and was scared to get on it. I put small strips cross ways on it but they are to far apart and they still slide in between the strips. I will post pics soon. I keep forgetting to get batteries for the camera.
