We recently purchased a house with a quarter acre yard and want to try raising chickens for the first time. We are in the process of building a coup and have been researching different breeds to see what would suit our needs best. we live in longmont colorado so cold hardyness is a factor. we have other pets and young nieces/nephews that visit regularly so friendliness and no aggression are important as well. we also would prefer some variety in egg color. city code only allows 4 per home. our current idea is:

1 easter egger
1 welsummer
1 buff orpington
1 barred rock

any thoughts on that combination? we are total novices so any advice would be appreciated :) thanks!

That sounds like a good combination to me, keeping in mind I am no expert!

They all are relatively the same size birds, are getting them as chicks?

yep we are planning on getting chicks from our local feed store. we have a little box set up with a heat lamp and food/water waiting for them

Oh then yeah, especially if they will be raised together, Have fun with them!

you do have to remember that even in the best natured breeds - there are oddballs that can have aggression problems and will need to be rehomed. Or the pullet that starts crowing one day. Will the shop take back "accidental roosters."
